General Updates

Many of you know that Podiobooks has had a serious system failure in the last few days. Evo shared the traffic logs with me and I don’t know if I’m proud or chagrinned to learn that one of the key contributors to the system meltdown was Owner’s Share. Starting with the release on Christmas Eve, the overall system load started climbing and peaked on 1/13 at something over 2x normal load.

Unfortunately, the system didn’t really have that much excess capacity and stuff started going bad.

There were some other releases during that time but visits to Owner’s Share constituted almost 15% of all web traffic for the period – and the page didn’t exist for half of the period covered.

I’ll be posting the episodes here until Podiobooks gets back up. It should be back by Friday and we’ll be in much better shape then. The net result is that the costs to podiobooks.com just doubled. Evo has put up an explanation on the front door of Podiobooks and if you can help out, the donations go straight to keeping the service free.

Thanks for your patience while we get this sorted out.

I wonder how many chapter were able to be “trimmed” with the “from the mouth of babes”. It would have been a nice twist if those plot lines had been able to be followed and then the reveal at the end.
Was “red herring” the original “tag” to mark those plot lines that was then rolled back into the story?
I miss the extension .. but only because there would have been more story.

  2. Nate says:

Shares in the company are irrelevant. He doesn’t split his owner’s share. The private stock ownership doesn’t obligate the ship to pass the owner’s share to the stock holders. They are investors, not partners.

Simpson states the terms back in the beginning of the book. I’d go look them up but I’m still trying to get 23 up tonight (and failing)

  3. Nate says:

@delbert – none. That’s the original line and i cut, at most, a few adverbs from that chapter. The majority of the cuts happened between what is now chapter 1 and chapter 2 and consisted largely on actions on the Agamemnon.

  4. Jamming says:

@ Nate – (about failing) Noooooo…(falls to quivering mass on the floor)…(delrious) Episode 23, I need you…(twitches into insentience).

  5. Gleep says:

    *points up* what he said.

  6. Peter Ellis says:

Don’t forget a share for the ship’s pooka

  7. Sal says:

I don’t think the Pooka gets a share, just seed money and mass allotment, but I could be wrong.

Jonesin’ for Ep 23 here too…..no presure Nate :-)

  8. Roz says:

03:00GMT checking hourly for 23! Twitch, twitch…:-) Don’t know if it’s a relief that the next fix ISN’T there as this means the pleasure won’t be over as quickly. – And what will we do then??
Thanks again Nate – just off to check ….

  9. be''etlh says:

I believe the Pookah is unpaid, and has only mass allotment. Money can be funneled *through* the pookah, and someone could put money in the pookah’s account to sit there, but they don’t actually get paid.

  10. annoyance says:

It’s at the Captain’s discretion whether the pookah gets paid. It’s generally used as either a reward or as an act of benevolence for the ship or a member of the crew.

OK i am worried about the chief now Nate…..Ish really needs to fire him and get a replacement as we speak.Think even Malone could do the same job as he been doing lately and with passangers?anyway AWSOME job Sar.Think all this is putting some preasure on you though but you know its a lot of people out here loving the storie(s).You know with your story telling voice you could probably make a living out of just this….reading books to be sold.Again good job……have to go to work myself now but carpentry isnt as fun as yours lol.Maybe i should acctually buy myself something to download it to so i can keep listening while working but then again…how much work would I do then?

  12. Ada Kerman says:

I donated to Podiobooks last night. I thought you lot would like to know that in Evo’s thank-you email he said that already after one day they have enough donations to pay for the new server for months to come.

  13. Nate says:

Thanks Lars. I’ve actually got a book to do for a publisher now. I just can’t get to it because of this. :)

Thanks Ada. All contributions are gratefully accepted.

  14. Megan says:

One question, and a related suggestion: Is the ship called Iris or Icarus? When you edit for print, make sure you pay attention and make it consistent. Right now it’s like every other episode the name of the ship is different. Ish explained the name, Icarus, at the press conference, so I thought that would ultimately be the name and that the initial name of Iris was changed….but maybe I misunderstood?

  15. Nate says:

@megan – The company name is Icarus .. the ship name is Iris … I *think* I’ve used those two consistently. It’s entirely possible that I botched it.

  16. matthew says:

you used those names where needed at the coming out party for ish and when he meets his dad ish tells him the name of the ship

  17. Nate says:

Yes, Matthew – the press conference announced the formation of the shipping company — Icarus. At that point nobody knows what the name of the ship is. In two conversations about the ship’s name, Ishmael tells (first) Simpson and (second) his father the name of the ship.
