When he graduates from the Academy at Port Newmar, Ishmael Horatio Wang reports for duty in his first assignment as an officer. When he gets to his new ship, he finds things are not exactly the way he’d learned in school. The coffee tastes like used engine oil, the ship has no heart, and the nearest decent tailor is two quadrants away. What’s a new Third Mate to do? Will he be able to trust Billy?

Subscribed, downloading, standing by to enjoy.

  2. Ben says:

Huge congrats Ish on the graduation! And Nate as well for producing another book, which I’m sure will be more than fantastic!

Thanks again for all the hard work you do to bring us these wonderful tales!

  3. Stacy says:

YAY! I’m going to put on my Lois Engineering Crew shirt and snuggle up to listen!

  4. Jack H says:

Stacy where did you get that shirt…
Thank God the Shakes will finally stop!

  5. Jordan C D says:

Got A ideal for your next book that might or might not be a good Ideal.
So they seem to go to a night club in ever book. or some place off the ship.
So why not play some not well known music but could be played at some place like that when ever your a a night club seen. just have it at very low. sort of a low back ground music. and have it with no speaking part in the music.

The down side to this is that it might not help the mood you are trying to set up for the seen or for the book for that matter.

and if you have some not well known then that might give it a feel of music in that day and age.

  6. Nate says:

Jack: The shirt’s in my CafePress store

Jordan: I’ve thought of going for a more “audiodrama” production by adding ambient noise, but everything I add to the production takes time and every sound added to the stream has the potential to be a distraction, so I’ve ruled that out for now. Perhaps in another series I might go for that, but with Ishmael, you’re gonna be stuck with my reading and the only extras will be the intro, outro, and bridges.

  7. There are t-shirts…. OH YES!

  8. Nate says:

    More over on Geek Label

The coffee cups are the best sellers on CafePress tho :)

  9. dustin says:

Mr. Lowell I have to say I have now caught the author once again. I cant wait for the next episode…. I want to say with your music I love all your choices it really ties in with Ish in how mature and cultured he is and I think extremely fitting with the story type such as shipping. I loved the jacket scene at dinner Outstanding.

keep it up My good Man

  10. Stacy says:

The engineering crew shirt is the softest shirt I’ve ever owned! I love it. Very comfy and stylish!

  11. Stacy says:

The Organic Cotton Crew Tee. It says Engineering crew on the back. I’m going to have to get a new one soon. It’s so soft and comfortable that I’m going to wear it out soon. Nate, please make some for DST and have at least one be the organic cotton.

Loving the new book. I’m on my second time through already. Can’t wait for more!

  12. James says:

Congratulations on the new book. I am loving what I have heard so far. I have listened to the five episodes you have released and was wondering if you had any sort of release schedule.

  13. Nate says:

I don’t have a release schedule as such — other than the implied “one-episode-a-week” because it’s on Podiobooks. With five episodes up now, I’m good until August :)

In reality I’ll push out 5 episodes at a whack as soon as I get them done so there’ll be 4 more releases before the 25 episodes are completed. Typically, I can do an episode a day.

The reality is, if you subscribe, you’ll get them as soon as they hit the feed and a schedule doesn’t mean much. iTunes is being sticky about accepting my feeds but you should still be able to subscribe through podiobooks.

  14. James says:

Thanks, I have added you to my feed reader.

  15. Williampall says:

Any feeds for the book other than podiobooks? podiobooks isn’t letting me log in because it says I don’t have my password right, and when I ask them to e-mail the password . . . . nothing. I try to register with a different e-mail address and the “e-mail verification” process never sends an e-mail to verify that e-mail. Sorry to rant about podiobooks here, but I really would like to listen to Double Share some time this century.

  16. Nate says:

check your spam filter for the password change .. and you can always scroll down to the bottom of the title page and grab the episodes manually. I’ve registered it with iTunes, but it hasn’t been approved yet. I’ll let you know when it’s up

  17. Williampall says:

I had checked the Spam Filter, but it was still a no go . . . . but I didn’t re-lize the thing about just grabbing itfrom the bottom of the page. Thank you. I just finished South Coast today.

  18. Glad to see Double Share says:

The wait is over. Let’s see him overcome some difficulty…

  19. dustin says:

Nate I think I found a minor error in the last three episodes of double share. With the first relief of the watch when Mr. Burnstien relieves the watch form the 2nd mate she says the ship is refueled. Then when Nart barges in in the final five minutes of episode 5 she says the second mate is needed to cosign for refueling. I find it hard to believe that that far in space you can get the fuel before you have to pay for it. At the moment you have to prepay at all pumps here in tennessee all the time. I imagine that a space ship refueling cost alot more than 40 bucks worth of gas. Like I said this is not terribly important but I do not know ship purchaseing procedure.

keep them coming I can not wait for six.

    Dustin

  20. Nate says:

Yup … procurement is not “pay in advance” … that isn’t an error but it is confusing.

  21. steady says:

great so far but I was anticipating a book where he was at the academy and joined a ship at the second half.

Oh and can you subscribe through iTunes because I am having difficulty finding it!

  22. Nate says:

The feed has been submitted to iTunes but not yet approved thru their processing. Should be only a matter of another day or so and you’ll be able to subscribe thru iTunes directly.

And I’ve struggled with the “Ishmael Goes to College” story — *IF* I write it, it’ll be titled Port Newmar but I’m not sure I can add anything new to the “x goes to College” trope. We’ll see.

  23. steady says:

Ok thanks any idea when it will be finished and all episodes uploaded? Thanks in advance.

    S

  24. Nate says:

There will 25 episodes in all. I got lucky this weekend and managed to record 5 more since Friday. Those are in the QC queue and will release in the next day or so … I typically do them in batches of 5 as part of my production process. That gives my in-house QC a chance to work on them. I would expect that the whole thing will be done within a couple of weeks — barring unforeseen etc…

  25. steady says:

Sorry for being kinda retarded but what’s QC? :-(

  26. Nate says:

    Quality Control :)

  27. That is such a fast recording rate. I told all my listeners that I suspected that the next five would probably be up in a week or two… but the whole thing in two weeks!?! Permission to be stunned and amazed, Sar?

  28. Nate says:

The next 5 are just waiting for Podiobooks approval .. I’ll be recording number 11 today … so ya .. permission granted.

  29. Jordan C D says:

WoW. How long does it take for there OK most of the time.

O and when you are weighting A book and some one says OK do you have it all upper case or what.
because firefox will not let me be with out have my ok 100% upper case

  31. Jordan C D says:

    weighting is writing
leave up to a teen to mess up such a easy word :(

  32. Nate says:

I never noticed. I think I usually spell it Okay.

  33. Ceroth says:

I just started listening and already I love the story. It is so great to be back in the universe of the Solar Clipper. I loved the description of Tai Chi and it’s cool that Ish has taken it up. What I enjoyed most that when you were listing some of the Tai Chi moves, I knew what you were talking about, having been studying Kung Fu and Tai Chi for the past 4 Stan years myself. Please keep up the awesome work.

  34. Nate says:

Thanks! I try to make things as realistic as possible given that it’s, you know, fiction. :)

  35. torerling says:

Some days ago I started to re-listen the first 3 books to speed up the wait, and after coming a couple of episodes in I saw that you had already uploaded five, one word, wow, I love the story even more now than last time, and I’ve gone through the first and half of the second book in two days now, at this rate I can just continue on in full share, great work, really love the story Nate, but for me now, off to the dreamworld again, Ish, here I come!

  36. Josh says:

I just spent the last 2 1/2 hours snarfing down episodes 6-10. I’m loving Double Share, thanks Nate!
I think I noticed a very minor continuity error in episode 9. At about timestamp 19:04 or 19:05 Freddie says “and you’re surprised Kramer was walking funny this morning?” I think Kramer should be Davies.
Thank you for the story. It’s fantastic. I can’t wait for episodes 11-15.

  37. Hade Debaillie says:

    Hey Nathan,

Like Josh above, I also find myself practically inhaling this new story. Today, I spent my coffee break at work listening to one of your episodes, which earned me a few funny looks from my colleagues. Let me just state for the record that I dearly hope you will end your struggle with the “Ish goes to college” story by eventually writing it, because I might just blame you for causing serious withdrawal issues otherwise :p.

For some reason, Ishmael ‘s character resonates with me in a way that very few people – yes, I mean real, flesh and blood people – ever have. Maybe because … well, he ‘s just the kind of person I would like to be if I grow up. Your stories convince me that I CAN be that person if I try because, well … Even in the face of a dead mother, an empty bank account, and having to maneuver his way around some nasty pieces of work like mister Bernstein and that man who calls himself a Captain, Ishmael consistently succeeds in making the world a better place for himself and those around him. Ergo: so can I, right?

In the same way you add spring to some people ‘s step by giving them Ishmael Wong as a morning commute companion, you ‘ve given me the slight push I needed to start viewing life in a different perspective. I ‘m a happier person for it.

OK, now I ‘m officially out of cheesy comments, but I just wanted you to know that, in case you ever need to be reminded of why your countless hours spent writing are worth it.

I must say, I do have a bit of a problem accepting a world in which people consider themselves civilized, and yet will literally use other people in whatever way they please, just because they can. But then again, when put into that kind of general terms, I suppose I ‘ll have to admit that we already live in that world. Which, I guess, is another reason I like your books so much: they tell me loud and clear that anyone can make a difference … even if all they can really do is make a better pot of coffee. And what ‘s more: the way you frame it, I ‘m compelled to believe it, too!

    Thanks for sharing!

    – Hade

  38. Nate says:

    Wow.

    Blush.

    Thanks.

    :D

  39. Diane says:

Amen to Hade’s comments… I hadn’t realized until she stated it… but I feel exactly the same way! I want the whole world to “read” these books because the message is soooo good. And yes, I find myself (even though I *am* all grown up) trying to make things around me better, in spite of my own problems.

    Thanks Nate for being awesome!

  40. Diane says:

Oh… and the “Ish goes to College” isn’t quite the study, study, study some more story you threatened us with! There is the Sensei Newmar story… the shuttle pilot story… summer cruises… the hubris you talk about… Getting to know the commandant (and why he helped Ish get the William Tinker berth)… the break up with Bev… And all the how did Pip and Diane do parts! I have come to care for all these characters… I am curious about them all!

  41. Dustin says:

oh yes and Diane forgot to mention one more thing that needs to be covered that I still want to know is how did Ish come up with the cash for the last couple of semsters.

  42. Nate says:

Loans … It was in one of the early chapters that I cut out.

  43. Dustin says:

thanks i was wondering how he had so much cash to splurge on the hotel room.

    see you around the docks

  44. Dustin says:

oh yeah are we going to get a link with the Tinkers roster on the links?

  45. Nate says:

Yes. I’ll do a workup on the Tinker. I have it here somewhere .. just need to make sure I’ve got all the changes and easter eggs in place. :)

  46. dustin says:

    SAAAAWWWEEEEEEEEEETTTT.

nice I want to start getting names and with sections.

  47. Hi, Nate. Great to here Double Share is being posted. Unlike a lot of folks, I always wait until the whole book is posted before listening. Living over here, delayed gratification has become my middle name. :) Looks like I have time to go back and relisten to all the other books to get my mindset right.

25 Chapters! Ya hoo! Thanks mate!

  48. Nate says:

There are a LOT of people who wait until it’s over to listen. It’s one reason that I get the books produced as quickly as I can. You’ll wait longer between books, but the wait between episodes will be as short as I can make it .. and since I know most people are mainlining them, I gave up on Story So Far segments as just more production that nobody really cares much about. :)

  49. quandmeme says:

I’m a mainliner and its not my place to say, but I like the writing. It doesn’t feel like you’ve rushed it so I don’t know how you composed so quickly. In addition to the nice turns of phrases, the pacing feels right. I think you have matured a lot. You pulled it off, but sometimes it felt like you had the Ish-experiences an event, Ish lets Pip in on it, and then Pip and Ish have to explain it again to the gang layered narratives. I mention this only because in Double Share the initial menage-a-trois (only those fluent in franglais will like that) feels different because I don’t feel like you recap it in the same voice/detail each time and it is fun. You are handling some tough subjects and can’t make everyone happy about it, but I appreciate your tackling it.

  50. Nate says:

In the first three books, I *did* do a lot of re-telling, but tried to vary the details a bit to flesh it out a little more with each re-tell. I’ve got too much to tell in Double Share to permit that kind of story telling.

So, thanks. I *hope* this is working :)
