Owner’s Share

A Trader’s Tale from the Golden Age of the Solar Clipper : Book Six

When Diurnia Salvage and Transport undergoes a change in management, Captain Ishmael Horatio Wang finds himself adrift in a sea of red ink, and intrigue. He dives in only to find that he is over his head in a universe where cut-throat competition takes on an all new meaning.

What price will he pay for his Owner’s Share?

I’ve started recording. It’ll be 30 episodes total and I have no idea how long it will take. It’s a lot of words!

I need music!

I’ve permission from Tom Joad to use Larry O’Gaff

I’ve used the fiddle music of J. F. Archer before and rather fancy this Anchorachan Strathspey for Owner’s Share. He also has Garrison’s Frolic, which is a sailor’s tune from the early 1800s. Mr. Archer has a rather substantial collection at the Internet Archive. Is there one you like better than these?

I’m also listening to a whole bunch of other stuff, like this collection from Xerfa and AlionSonny.

Keep in mind that I have some rather inflexible requirements for my music. The intro must not be longer than 20 seconds — 15 is better — and I’ll probably only use the first 30 seconds and the last 60 seconds of anything I pick. That’s how long my intro and outro runs. Ideally the piece ends with a nice bump and not a slow fade, but that’s negotiable.

Have suggestions? Leave me a link in the comments.

Awesome news! I have been looking for my fix of Ishmael for months! (I’m sure you will but…) Let us know when Half Share hits the presses because I want to chip in for my copy.

Should be any day now. I keep looking myself to see if it’s up …

  10. Nate says:

    Yes. Yes, it does.

  11. Karl says:

Any updates on when Half Share ebooks will be out? I’ve really been waiting for this after reading Quarter Share, which was some of the best written indie sci fi I’ve read this year.

  12. Dan says:

WooHoo! I can’t wait to shake the dust of these other inferior audio books off my feet and get moving again in the Solar Clipper universe! Thanks Nate!

  13. Josh says:

Good. That blank above the tell-tale had me worried. Can’t wait until the official departure date and time is posted and the Captain calls us to the Cabin with status to report.

  14. Jafo Calamity says:

I hear ya shippy, I hear ya

  15. Rabin Hudson says:

I like Larry O’Gaff. It’s upbeat and fits the style, but at the same time it’s different from what came before. I like the J.F. Archer just fine, but change is good, sar!

  16. Nate says:

Karl, Half Share has been released from layout. It *should* be any day now, but I’ve been saying that for weeks.

  17. Chad Munn says:

I have never waited as uncomfortably for any literary work as I have for owners share. Bravo, and curse you for making me so eager for it! I vote for anchorachan strathspey as being my favorite in light of the former works and music. Thank you for sharing your world with us.

  18. Jafo Calamity says:

    Weeks, Sar? Keep practicing Sar.

  19. Jillian says:

I can hardly wait for Owners Share…! I have listened to the music choices, and must say that I really like http://www.archive.org/details/Xerfa_575 for the sequel to South Coast. Not that the music for Cape Grace will help with the production of Owners Share. I agree with you (and Rabin) that Larry O’Gaff suits the series perfectly.

  20. Mark Roberts says:

Awesome news. I’ll be check iBooks daily.

  21. Ross says:

This is the best birthday present ever!

  22. Ari B. says:

Awesome. More Solar Clipper tales to keep me company when I’m taking care of my new daughter. Excellent. :-)

  23. Ross says:

My vote is for Larry O.

  24. Scott says:

I’m shipping out on the second. Leaving home port for New Years with the family. Sar, is there any chance I can have a nice FULL iPod for all those long hours in the deep dark? And don’t say study! I just finished my last course for the Fall semester (yes today) in Ethics with an A. I don’t want to do any studying until the next round of testing come around!

  25. Adam says:

Great, so looking forward to this. And also sad as I recall hearing that this was going to be the last Ishmael story :-( Although I hope there are more Golden Age stories to tell…

  26. Kevin says:

Candy canes are good for sore throats – If you keep recording I’m sure Santa will bring you a sack full.

  27. Geoff says:

Excellent !!!! I suggest using a sailors jig because I’m doing a happy jig right now.I’ve listened to the others twice now and love them as much now as I did the 1st time round. Definitely keeping an eye on the online bookstores for half share. Just finished reading my ebook copy of Quarter share and need more.

  28. Ignatz says:

Mr. Lowell, congratulations on launching into “Owner’s Share”. We all wish you the best with it. I would be happy with either of the first two musical selections (Larry O’ Gaff or Anchorachan Strathspey). While Xerfa’s music is good, it seems a bit too frantic in temp and doesn’t hold the same ‘lonely mariner’ feeling as the selections from the previous Share books. AlionSonny’s numbers are just a wee bit too ‘midi programmed’ in feel, making it seem out of step with what came before.

  29. Blueverie says:

    Larry O’Gaff, definitely. Can’t wait :)

  30. R Mingus says:

Exciting!! Let the obsessive checking (here and Podiobooks) begin. I agree that Larry O’Gaff is the best of those shown. I still like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SH2CO99q1JQ but permission might be an issue.

  31. Uzetaab says:

No words. Nope. None. There are no words that properly express how excited I am.

  32. Kenn says:

While Larry O’Gaff is a great tune, i get the solar clipper feel from Anchorachan Strathspey. It sounds like perfect punctuation to the previous bits of music you have used. I like to think that the music intros are little bits that Ishmale is humming while walking the gangways or reading logs while on watch and Anchorachan Strathspey has that feel.

  33. The HellJack says:

Ok, items in some form of order:

    1) Huge fan of your work, good sir. I am greatly looking forward to “Owners Share”, as I’ve recently finished re-listening to all of you audio books (in order).

    2) You asked for music suggestions. Well, I did a bit of searching over at Archive.org and found a band running under the “Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 2.5 UK: Scotland” license. They are called “Ceol Ti mBotha Suaimhnis” and they have a song named “Fiddler at the Crossroads” that I think fits your criteria and needs (as far as production value goes) and fits the theme of your stories. if you are interested, they can be found here: http://www.archive.org/details/raretunes_241_fiddler-crossroads

    3) I’ve taken the liberty of doing a bit of fanciful editing of the song above, first to have the first :20 encompass the better part of the intro and second to edit out the applause at the end. I know you can do a better job then myself, but I figure this might give you a better idea of what this tune might sound like if used for this book.

I hope this helps in some small way. Thank you again for sharing such fantastic stories, Mr. Lowell.

  34. Nate says:

Yanno? I looked at this group but I didn’t listen to this song.

Thanks for the clippage. I’ll see how it plays against the words!

  35. Sean says:

You’re really just trying to rekindle that childhood ‘can’t wait for Christmas morning’ feeling, aren’t you? We’re pacing in anticipation!

  36. Jamming says:

Thank you for making my life a little brighter.

  37. David says:

Woot! Yay! Hooray! Happy New Year to us!

Now, to finish FS (3rd time), and reread DS (3rd time) and CS (4th time?) in preparation! To the treadmill!

  38. skrap1r0n says:

Awesome! I can’t wait to hear it. I can honestly say that I haven’t waited for a book ever as much as this one.

  39. Kenny says:

Nate is there anyway you might as our Captain place an E.T.D on the websight for us to check regularly?

  40. I absolutely can’t wait! In the mean time I have downloaded other podiobooks that you narrate.

  41. Nate says:

it’s a matter of days now.

I just need to stop looking at comments and spend more time recording.

  42. Meason says:

I am sooooooo excited!!! I just called my friends and we had a long gab about what might be coming in the new story! It is like wondering what Santa is going to bring us for Christmas!!!! Thanks for giving us your time and effort, I know that I really appreciate what you do!
PS, when HS comes out, I know that there will be several copies of the book being delivered this direction!!
I really feel like Snoopy dancing on top of his house!!!!

  43. Susan says:

It’s is so good to hear that Half Share will be coming out in ebook format soon! I’ve been checking Amazon’s Kindle store several times a week since last May, after I bought & devoured Quarter Share. :-) And here’s hoping that the rest of your series will soon follow! I’ve got a spot in my Kindle waiting for them…

  44. Josh says:

Cant wait for the new book to come out i think this is one of the best stories i listen to and i hope to read here soon. I also want to know im not the only one who thinks that these would make some feakin sweet movies. I think they need some new sci fi in the movie busness and this some hot stuff…

  45. Norman728 says:

Hooray! Both are coming out soon. I have to fire up my ereader. What Ebook store(s) is HALF SHARE being released in?

  46. Nate says:

All of them — Kindle, Nook, iBook, Smashwords… And I *think* we’re working on Googlebooks.

  47. Lars E says:

Been listening to all your books….infact i am doing it again.I cant hardly wait for owners share. Will have to buy the books as well but so far i have only quarter share *sigh*.Keep up the good work :D

  48. Michael says:

Glad to hear it! I have been checking every few days on iTunes to see if either Half share was out in iBooks or if Owners Share is out on podiocast.

Another thing I have been wondering. Is Owners Share going to be the last one? I am no writer but I was thinking it would be pretty cook if the universe you created kind of went the way Star Wars did (Not talking about the force lol) i.e. other people could write storys in your universe.

    Just a passing thought.

  49. Kilava says:

I would love if they are more books in this universe. I like the fact that they differ from the “mainstream” setup of most science fiction books.
Personally I would like to see a short story about Ishmael’s time at the Academy in Port Newmar, since it in my opinion is a gap in the storyline.

You can say a lot about Ishmael being to perfect and things going his way to much but in the end they are book has the feature that I value a lot, you want to read them again :D
Thank you for writing these books and taking your time to podcast them.
