Owner’s Share

A Trader’s Tale from the Golden Age of the Solar Clipper : Book Six

When Diurnia Salvage and Transport undergoes a change in management, Captain Ishmael Horatio Wang finds himself adrift in a sea of red ink, and intrigue. He dives in only to find that he is over his head in a universe where cut-throat competition takes on an all new meaning.

What price will he pay for his Owner’s Share?

I’ve started recording. It’ll be 30 episodes total and I have no idea how long it will take. It’s a lot of words!

I need music!

I’ve permission from Tom Joad to use Larry O’Gaff

I’ve used the fiddle music of J. F. Archer before and rather fancy this Anchorachan Strathspey for Owner’s Share. He also has Garrison’s Frolic, which is a sailor’s tune from the early 1800s. Mr. Archer has a rather substantial collection at the Internet Archive. Is there one you like better than these?

I’m also listening to a whole bunch of other stuff, like this collection from Xerfa and AlionSonny.

Keep in mind that I have some rather inflexible requirements for my music. The intro must not be longer than 20 seconds — 15 is better — and I’ll probably only use the first 30 seconds and the last 60 seconds of anything I pick. That’s how long my intro and outro runs. Ideally the piece ends with a nice bump and not a slow fade, but that’s negotiable.

Have suggestions? Leave me a link in the comments.

I like both Larry O’Gaff and Red Haired Boy best. Both give me that “share” feeling.

Thanks in advance for my favorite Christmas present!

  2. Nate says:

@michael: Owner’s Share is the last of the “Share” series. It’s not the last book set in this universe.

@kilava: I’ve reserved the title “Port Newmar” for a filler novel about the Academy. I may or may not do it depending on how I feel about Education.

    @Lisa: I like Larry O’Gaff myself.

  3. Kilava says:

Glad to hear that there might be a novel about that part of the story :D

You could use Pip as the main character for the novel about the academy and tell what happens with Ishmael from Pips perspective. This would make a transition from Ishmael to Pip smoother if you want to write more about Pip.

    Hi Nate,
I just listened to the intro to Owners Share. WOW!! It is an interesting stage you have set! :-)
You are not good, you are Excellent! My husband and I will be glad when we can hear the rest of the story.
I made CDs of the other Share stories and have about wore them out listening to them.

Thank you so much for sharing your talent with us. Your stories are refreshing.
On one of my web pages, I have made links so others can find your books, too.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year,
    Sandy and John Crawford

  7. Norman728 says:

My Interest is peaked about The Port Newmar Book|Podcast? but that depends on when it’s set. The Past maybe with Ish’s First Captain Captain Giggone or Maybe The next generation after Ish Became Captian.

  8. Norman728 says:

    IT’s LIVE!!!!

  9. Carla says:

I Found it!!!! Yeepee!! Love the cover of Half Share and Can’t wait to listen to Owner’s Share. When will it be up on iTunes?????

  10. Michael says:

Great, why can’t Ish be happy with who he wants? Oh well, and why did security find the owner and not Kirt? Just a few thoughts

  11. I am sooooo enjoying “Owner’s Share”! After I powered through the 5 episodes so far, I decided to re-listen to “Captain’s Share” to remind myself of the characters at the beginning of OS. Wow! I remembered CS was good, but I’d forgotten just how good. I think I could just keep the Solar Clipper podiobooks on a loop and I don’t think I would get tired of them. :)

  12. Duncan Hilchie says:

You are an EVIL EVIL man. A spanner to the cranium would hurt less than waiting till monday to see what happens next. You have been taking a page out of a certain CLIFF HANGING BASTARD’S (yes I am talking about you J.C.) book with this story. :p Keep up the good work.

  13. Todd Baker says:

  14. Wink Jones says:

(Can you tell I really like it???)

Thank you for another wonderful book.

As much as Nate appreciates your kind comments—he’d probably appreciate a DONATION even more. While his podiobooks are free, his cost to exist in our real world isn’t. Show him you really appreciate his talent by clicking the “Donate” button in the right-hand column.

  16. Nate says:

Thanks, Harry. Donations are nice. Feel free to donate if you want/can. Please don’t feel like it’s an obligation. It’s hard out there right now. I’m not the only one that’s lost a job in the last year, I know.

If you can’t donate but want to help, ratings on the Itunes music store and Amazon are always appreciated. :)

And if you *can* donate, please consider donating thru the title page at podiobooks.com instead of here. That way we toss a few coins their way to cover the costs of bandwidth and hosting that allows me to bring you the works to begin with.

  17. ajdowns says:

I just noticed (when I was writing down the dates of when the chapters are taking place, yeah, I know that sounds pretty anal…) that Chapter 45 (the first of ep 20) the date is said to be January 13, but the Chapter 44 (the last of the previous episode) was January 14

  18. Nate says:

That happens. I’ll check the text and make sure it’s right there. I occasionally read one thing and say another.

  19. ajdowns says:

    No problem Nate,
I just wanted to bring it to your attention for the future releases. Definitely enjoying the book so far.

  20. David says:

Yesterday (Dec 17) I just started re-re-re-listening and realized that the beginning of the book occurs on December 17. Woot! It’s like listening in real-time!
