Alright, shipmates!
I’m about to start cranking up Double Share for real and I need to know the name of Ishmael’s next ship. It’s a bulk hauler, independently owned and operated under the flag of the Diurnia Salvage and Transport.
What I need is a name. Submit your suggestions as comments! Maybe YOU can name the next ship in the Trader’s Tales!
I was thinking about how much Ish likes to run and thought of two names that he might like, both of which belonged to men who won gold medals in the Olympics.
First is Jacobus Francscus (Jim) Thorpe or his American Indian name, Wa-Tho-Huk which translates into Bright Path, one of the outstanding athletes of the twentieth century. He was a star in many athletic events (e.g., baseball, football, basketball) and was named to the Track and Field Hall of Fame. Although his path in his older years was not bright, he was named by the ABC Wide World of Sports to be the Athlete of the Century.
The second name I thought of that might be especially important since he was a track and field star would be James Cleveland “Jesse” Owens who won four gold medals in the 1936 Olympics held in Nazi Germany. In 1976 he received the Medal of Freedom award from President Gerald Ford.
On the other hand, if you’d be interested in some women’s names who were/are great athletes, you could consider, for their track and field prowess: Jackie Joyner-Kersee, I mentioned Babe Didrikson Zaharias previously, Wilma Rudolph (who overcame polio to win at the Olympics), and Florence Griffith Joyner.
Great stories I have enjoyed them all looking forward to hearing the rest.
I was thinking of the pooka Harvey as well and I would think a ship named the “Elwood P. Dowd” might attract a Six feet three and a half inch Pooka named Harvey.
Why Ishmal knows the pooka is Harvey may be ishmals family’s past. I think he had a greatgrandfather that was a west coast shaman. And he seems to have inherited some of the gift.
Been kicking this around in my head for a while, and one name (related to absolutely nothing) that keeps popping up in my head is “William Tinker”. I just like how it feels and sounds.
How about “Kimball O’Hara” the Kim of Rudyard Kipling known as Friend to all the world.
Well, at first, I was thinking it was Ish’s own ship, so this may not be quite right, but it’s a more subtle nod to classic literature. It should be the Barbara Wellesley, Horatio Hornblower’s wife from the novels. Alternatively, I like “The Witch of Endor”, which was one of Hornblower’s ships (and might make for a very interesting pookah).
… and my daughters are suggesting “Aurora Phoenix” for the next ship name. :)
How about the Navarre or the Isabeau after the main characters from Ladyhawke?
Now that is one of my all time favorite movies! So many good lines. “Sir, I talk to God all the time, and frankly, he has never mentioned you!”
Salvage is one of its primary jobs so what about ” I.S.U. Protector ”
http://www.marine-salvage.com/default.asp
International Salvage Union (ISU) member salvors provide essential services for the world’s maritime and insurance communities. Members are engaged in marine casualty response, pollution defence, wreck removal, cargo recovery, towage and related activities.
This is what is on their first page about what they do and feel that there would be a lot of good stories about these types of operations.
The pooka would be a crewman who had died while rescuing others or had died while being rescued. And is there to try preventing further deaths among the crew.
If you remember the movie The Ghost of Flight 401 where Ernest Borgnine’s ghost appears on airplanes that used salvaged parts from the plane he died in he tried to prevent other crashes happening on those planes.
Hey Nate, Have you decided on a name yet? Or have the evil real life demon been keeping you distracted too much? Hope its going well adn I really hope Double share will be done soon :)
Have a great rest of the Week!

I’m leaving this open … heck, I’m about three weeks behind just posting the new artwork that everybody’s sending. Last week killed me because I was traveling on RL business and I’m still recovering.
I Drive a 18 wheeler in the northeast USA. I have listened to each book at least 14 times. Many ship names are very good, but how much help did you need for the first 3 books they all show real talent. you don’t need help, but thanks for involving us. many ship names are determined by the category of size. Lois was a special leader of their past and our future. sorry more latter typing in the dark
Hey Nate,
Got a couple of suggestions that I think I may have thrown at you over Twitter, but thought I’d formalize them here.
1) The Coelacanth – pronounced ‘See la canth’ – It was a large fish thought to be extinct for years and then suddenly reappeared. The word is Greek and means ‘Hollow-Spine’ which I thought describes a salvage ship as it would have all that storage space.
2) The Fisgard – This is a squadron in the Royal Navy that trains engineers, as Ish is training I thought this might be a subtle nod.
3) The Carillon – This is actually the heaviest musical instrument in the world and can weigh up to 100 tons.
4) The Clifford J Rodgers – This was the first purpose built container ship using the intermodal container system. Now someone please shoot me for finding that out when I should have been working!
5) The London – Hey, it’s my home and sounds dead cool!
Ok let me try this naming bit again. How about the Leahann Burgess. I just like the ring of it.
How about a Horror story … Ship “The Mac” … ship decal bull dog…… Ishmael systems officer… computer has pooka “Bill Gates” that keeps rewriting the computer code into windows 95. :-)
3 am get a bit twisted :-)
ok Im going back to Lois is a person from our future and his past history remembers people for a short time unless they become legion so far the nomenclatures i notice in the ship names is for freighters, A salvage? (back to that) ship type might have a different nomenclature but sailors are very superstitious type and … a name after any prev ship especially after it sank sounds bad. next Salvage ? if they stay on the straight and narrow they don’t have much to fear (just safety equipment !), but should something go wrong they might get off the beaten path. Then a salvage vessel would leave the beaten path to bring back “salvage”, after some deep astronomical sensing or something to find where they (the lost ship) went. Unless its a search, rescue and salvage then they might “boldly go” after a wayward ship, asteroid or other vessel. ok so Im trying to keep it short and not saying everything. I hope you get my drift. latter
well I finaly have a sugestion :
from Kernerman English Multilingual Dictionary (Beta Version) – Cite This Source – Share This
boatswain, bosun [ˈbəusn] noun
an officer who looks after a ship’s boats, ropes, sails etc
in Italian: Nostromo
I got it from the movie Alien, but it was a salvage vessel in space also!
and yes I was a boatswain in USN.
Hey, how about “Macbeth’s Toil and Trouble” or the ‘Macbeth’ for short/pooka referance. I think salavage and “Toil and Trouble” would go along well together :)
I have just recently discovered podiobooks and have come across your series … I have become hooked on the trader series. I have an idea for a salvage vessel name … Astrum Anguilla (astrum is latin for star and anguilla is the genus name for the american eel. Eels recycle dead creatures in the oceans and rivers .. a star eel would be good for recycling (salvaging) vessels in space …
I am looking forward to finishing half share and full share and in the future following Ishmael in Double Share.
The name should be the “Pookie Change”!!!!
