Happy Holidays

On Tuesday, Evo Terra contacted me about a scheduling mix up with Podiobooks releases and offered the opportunity to give all of my fans a bit of an early Christmas present. I’ve been recording like mad and teasing everybody with how many episodes I’ve gotten done ever since.

The title went live last night with five episodes, almost three hours worth of holiday cheer. It’ll be up on iTunes as soon as the feed clears Apple approval. I’ll get it added to my master feed as soon as I remember how to do it.

I wish you all a happy holiday season and safe and prosperous new year.

err refreshing .Sorry u just HAD to correct it :P

  2. Chris says:

Nate dropped way too many hits that something is going on with Greta for her involvement in the story to be over. I hope we’ll see Greta join Ish’s crew. I fear we won’t.

  3. Megan P. says:

Bev and her husband…that will be an interesting meeting. :o and I bet something Ish needs to see…

  4. BookerJ says:

“I bet something Ish needs to see…”…yea because everyone needs some salt in wounds now and again. Some people and relationships need to just stay in the past and move on and away from…far far away. I’m also hoping the Greta thing is a clean break, and no revisited. She burned him mildly, and I’d hate to see Ish be slow cooked over the fire for no reason. Things that were good for the time, are not always good now. I’m glad Nate wrote that out of the book. What I do hope is that by the end of the book…Ish is not alone, settled, and happy for a change.

  5. Michael McCarthy says:

It’s after 7 pm east coast time and no episodes on podiobooks. Anyone else feeling like the podiobooks guys aren’t holding of their end of the bargain? We all know that Nate’s a writing/recording machine, so it can’t be him…

  6. Brian W says:

I stopped by home halfway through my delivery route today to stop ad check for a new episode or two to put on the iPod and listen to in the truck, I can’t wait for more. Great Series, I started with Quarter share for Kindle and have gone the rest of the way through the podcasts.

  7. Nate says:

    No, this time it’s me.

I had car problems this morning and it sucked up all my available reading time.

    It should be better tomorrow.

  8. be''etlh says:

Can anyone give me an idea on update frequency? I found the series last summer, and went into a three day trance state in which I wandered aimlessly with earbuds, so I am experiencing a high level of anticipation for the next chapter.

  9. largesse says:

guys guys this thread is already at 100 posts … did you know theres a forum

  10. norman728 says:

I am so desperate for episodes that when my Ipod Touch’s screen cracked I dug out my Zune 8G to continue Listening. P.S. I am taking donations to help repair or Replace my Ipod touch. (Just Kidding , Maybe.)

  11. Jamming says:

@Chris Maybe Gamp’s would prefer to go to a tractor like Agamemnon or
maybe he would want to retire again? I hope Greta would be back soon too.

  12. GaryS. says:

As it stands we don’t know how Greta feels about Ish. She never said. In the beginning she told him he was acting like an idiot for treating her so badly. She also told him to talk to the person he was interested in before jumping to conclusions and working himself into knots. At which time Ish assumed she was saying she wasn’t interested in him. She told him to ask her how she felt and he didn’t listen. When Ish and Wyatt were talking, Wyatt keep asking Ish if she actually said she wasn’t interested and Ish said yes. But what she said and what Ish heard were two different things.

  13. Amber Eidson says:

Sorry to learn about the car trouble. It is never fun, even worse in winter. I have been listening again to the first 10 episodes and I love Gramps. Much as I miss characters when Ish says goodbye to them I appreciate meeting new characters. Kristen has been delightful, Simpson is great and I am looking forward to the rest of the book. I will trust your editing since I have enjoyed the whole series so far. That being said any chance of a ‘bonus’ episode at the end with deleted scenes…it might not be pertinent to Ishmael’s story but I would kinda like to hear what happened to Bev (and anyone else you care to give updates on, surely Mr Maxwell has been Capt. Maxwell for some time now, and Pip we have to hear about Pip.)

I can’t wait to see how/why Kurt is back in the story, would Ms. Maloni want him as a bodyguard? Or perhaps he will be a passenger on Ishmael ship now that he is presumably unemployed. So many things to find out. I hope your car gets fixed soon and isn’t too expensive.

  14. Nate says:

@be – I update as fast as I can. Holidays got in the way so I’m falling a bit behind on my normal average of one a day. I’m going to try to make that up and finish by the anniversary of the beginning of Quarter Share – Jan 12. It’s 20 episodes in less than 10 days so I don’t know if I’ll make it or not. I won’t sacrifice quality for speed so we’ll have to see.

@amber – car will be done tomorrow. It’s almost $1000 in repairs. While that’s bad, it’s also the only money I’ve had to put into it for a couple of years. Typical stuff, but it just took the time I needed to be in the booth with waiting for phone calls, dealing with tow trucks–plus the normal Monday/first day of the new year/kids back to school stuff.

    Fingers crossed :D

  15. Sandy Crawford says:

Hi Nate, Your last comment has been on my mind. – Please take your time with the editing and recording. Being creative is an art!!! – Machines punch out stuff with no feelings. — You put such life into your books and reading that it is a pleasure to hear you read. (Please do not burn yourself out.) You have just gotten over being sick and need to get more rest. Please do not let us push you. – Thank you so much for all that you do. – Sandy and John Crawford

  16. DaveH says:

Thought I’d check solarclipper.com just to see progress on Owner’s Share – TOP BANANA! Just downloading from iTunes now. Thanks Nate – I’ve really been looking forward to this!

  17. DanD says:

Reading into the conversation between Stacey and Ishmael it would seem the phrase “crash and burn” reminded Ish of something memorable and inspiring for the company name. This would be a wonderful place to learn the name of his mother. Going out of my mind waiting for the next download drop. Thanks so much Nate!

  18. F Riley says:

You know, the direction his ship will take has something to do with either coffee or flea markets. Not sure why rich people would tool around in his ship instead of yachts, but I do like the idea of a gypsy like caravan, his ship pulling into ports and using the flea markets to make huge profits! Maybe his passengers are artists and tinkers, people that would help him identify and establish new markets.

  19. skrap1r0n says:

How very awesome! thanks Nate. Now should I start listening now or wait for the series to be complete.

  20. MC says:

I think the comments of the extra structure around the windows is significant. No sure perhaps some sort of mounting for additional pod? I was optimistic of further episodes today with your comment yesterday so if podiobooks is slightly slow it’s probably due to a wide variety of clipper fans who keep checking!

  21. Ignatz says:

Nate, I’m feeling a little silly. I had inquired about share division amongst the crew, but see (upon some investigation) that this is covered in the Spacer’s Handbook section of your web site. (sigh!) I feel very much akin to the young, Ishmael Wong (in Quarter Share) who also forgot that he could use his tablet to access all sort of date about the ship, eductation, union rules, etc.

  22. Jon W. says:

I am loving the story so far, and eagerly await each new episode. I too have been curious about profit shares, more specifically how it went on the Agamemnon (and will go on the presumed Jez.). Using the shares example from the Handbook, it would seem that the officers on the Agamemnon made more share profits than the captain. With the hypothetical 10 kilocreds, DST gets 2000, Captain (Wong) gets 1000, leaving 7000 to be divided amongst what would seem to be a maximum of 11 shares. This amounts to 636 credits a share, meaning the officers as double share would receive 1272 credits. Is this true? This would seem to be both an advantage to the crew and officers but a disadvantage to the captain of an short staffed ship such as the Agamemnon. Does captain’s pay that greatly exceed the wages and shares of officers so that there is still incentive to become a captain? Or are these tractors the “bottom rung” on the captain’s ladder given to greeny captains who need to prove themselves worthy of a better ship that could haul more, which would lead to larger captain’s shares, and have more crew/officers (i.e. shares) to divide into the crew profits?

Thank you for all the hard work you have already put into this book and the series, and though I am eager for more, take all the time you need. You staying sane and healthy is more important than satisfying my addiction to your story.

  23. V says:

Jon W. the captain apparently also gets a double share (in addition to the 10%) according to http://durandus.org/fans/index.php?topic=185

  24. Joel says:

@Jon As Captain of the Agamemnon, Ishmael gets 15%. (Captain’s Shar 04 @ 3:00) Geoff offers base salary plus ten. Ish counters with base plus twenty, Geoff counters with base plus 15 and he will paint the cabin.
Sorry I have listened to the whole series, around 25 times. Almost memorized the whole series.

  25. V says:

It’s also mentioned in the comments section (January 4, 2011) of the Spacer’s Handbook https://solarclipper.com/spacers-handbook/

  26. Zeus says:

@ GaryS. – Actually, Greta says at one point “As it happens, you big romantic son of a gun, I think you’re one hell of a guy — but — not that way.” From that, it seems pretty clear she wasn’t interested in a deeper relationship with him so I’m not sure what’s going on with everyone (Kingsley, Mr. Wyatt, et al) thinking she’s got a thing for him. If she did, why did she lie? Because of his moping around was affecting morale? That seems more juvenile that what she accused *him* of doing. If she does return to romance him, I really hope Nate’s got a one heck of an Ace up his sleeve on that one because right now, I would be hard-pressed to like Greta after she pulled such shenanigans. “It’s getting in the way of your life” indeed.

  27. Jon W. says:

@Joel. – I have always taken “base plus 15%” to be referring to his salary as a DST employee. This wage being standard contract wage (i.e. minimum salary) plus 15%. Malloney talks of keeping his seniority, so this may be a monetary acknowledgment of experience/time served. To offer/demand a greater cut of the ship’s profits hurts the crew’s shares, which in my mind is not a good business model nor good for moral.

@Zeus. – I take Greta’s comments of “not that way” to refer to Ish’s no “screw with crew” policy. Given the hints dropped about Greta’s past, she is not interested in being Ish’s “bunk bunny”, which is what the phrase “screw with crew” really implies. Even though he has seen several examples of married couples (captain’s and engineers) in space together, It is clear from later chapters that Ish really has no idea / understanding of how HE could live that way. No woman, especially Greta, would want to get into a relationship that has no idea of where it will go or how it’ll get there.

As a general aside, it seems to me that in many ways, Ish seems just as emotionally crippled now as he describes himself to be in Half-Share. In that story, he found out what having and being best friends meant. The problem now is that all of Ish’s intimate relationships have been just sex, deliberately outside of his circle of friends. Early on, just sex with the spacer he meets in port, and ultimately just sex with Jen who he saw every 3 months. There was never really a relationship or intimate friendship with anyone he had sex with since Bev, and that was only once out of the context of “being ship board.” All his close emotional relationships with women since have thus been strictly professional and monastically platonic. He’s kept intimate friendships and sex in separate boxes locked in different rooms in his house. I think he needs to learn that sex is a part of marriage, not the whole nor the heart of it before he’ll be ready for a real relationship with Greta (or someone else, should that door truly be closed – which I don’t think it is)

  28. JaneAtPlay says:

Wow – in the absence of new eps – these discussions are very thought provoking! A bunch of somewhat random thoughts under the ‘my 2 cents’ umbrella

In general – it always struck me as odd that Ish forms such strong bonds with people in situ, but there’s never any “keeping in touch” evident – neither with peers, nor mentors. Maybe the timeframe is too short, but wondering how the Carstairs ‘do it’ and not asking a Carstair seems odd to me.

Greta – not re-listening with intent to deconstruct her every word – I thought she was just giving Ish an easy out from his unresolvable Greta-obsession. Removing the temptation, so he could get his personal and professional lives back under control. I didn’t buy it that she wasn’t interested. Lets also remember that in addition to Ish being somewhat damaged when it comes to expressing and acting on emotions – Greta has her own bagage, too.

Bev & spouse – I think this would have been a sweet reunion. They were no longer an ‘item’ early in Ish’s Academy career but your first love is always your first love. And maybe she would have had some valuable insight for Ish on his current love life!

Pirates?? – would have been a hoot!

Adrian Alvarez? Gotta admit that even though birth control seems to be perfected in the Golden Age – I did a little counting back. An added twist in the long lost father story?

Bodyguards – Until now, I always thought maybe there was a “hit” out on Maloney or something, because of somebody his pissed off. Now, with an awareness of his huge net-worth, it makes a little more sense. With Ish, I can understand needing someone to keep the public and the newsies at bay, but I don’t see a threat to life and limb – yet.

Ship names? I got nothin’ new. Was trying to spin something fun and Shakespearian – Ish liked Shakespeare – but yea. I got nothin’.

Thanks to all for this wonderful minutia to ponder. And a thank you to Nate, for being so involved in all the speculation – oh and for all the books too! ;)

  29. Nate says:

@joel – Jon’s got it correct — base plus 15 is not negotiating his share rate, but rather his salary.

  30. Josh says:

I think we’ve crashed podiobooks looking for updates… It no longer seems to be responding.

  31. Rick C says:

Podiobooks is back up, alas with only 10 eps still.

  32. Rick C says:

Reading all of this speculation makes me wonder how much recording time we cause Nathan to lose by him getting the chuckles in the recording booth thinking “Boy, the commenters never saw THIS coming”:)

  33. Dave says:

Chuckles, or evil-mad-scientist laughs? :) Bwaa ha ha ha haaaa!

  34. norman728 says:

Big Debt! who does Ish Owe and what does he Owe? This has bugged me He found the Chenakova while married(didn’t he?) so does that mean he owes Jen Some money?

  35. Brian W says:

Well Ish owes his company’s shareholders 40 million, payable in either 2 million a year in dividends in 5 years or by buying the 40 million in stock back.

  36. Jeffery says:

No he doesn’t owe any debt to his stockholders, and I doubt they would let him buy them out for only their investment. To be bought out they would want some sort of profit, 50- 60 million atleast to buy them out.

  37. Clem says:

It really sounds like Ish is setting himself up to be screwed over putting so much of his own money in to buy the ship. He is putting in way too much of his own money to be giving away such a large portion of the company. Also it is not like the lawyer is helping him out that much, 6% for a 90 day ‘secured’ bridge loan doesn’t seem like that good of a deal. I’m wondering whose side Kristen is really on?

  38. bookerj says:

@norman728 I had thought of that as well, but I’d think she signed her legal documents she was OK with her settlement and can’t go after more after that. Of course I’m a human being and not a lawyer…also not a greedy, cheating…person. So who knows? lol.

  39. Mike says:

    @ impatient
Thanks for the link…I still can’t find it on audiobooks. These episodes just go by so fast!!! Nate, while I am a steadfast fan and certainly want my fix NOW…take your time and take care of the business you need too (car, kids etc). Don’t worry about us, I am sure we all have at least a little fingernail left even though its getting pretty thin chewing with anticipation. :) And for all the fans out there…lets click on the donate button and help our beloved author fix his car!

  40. Norman728 says:

Listening Now and wondering if someone is a fan of Old school Superman…….Instead of an obsession with Double L’s I am seeing the Letter I.

  41. Jerry says:

Is there anyway the feed to iTunes can be fixed? The episodes are always in reverse order so you can’t start with episode 1 and just continue on. I find this with all of the podiobooks.com books.

  42. Nate says:

This is something you have to take up with Evo Terra – it’s considered a feature not a bug.

  43. Sandy Crawford says:

    Hi Nate,

Thank you for the 2 new episodes. Now we know the name of the ship and the company.

Ish is smart to make trial runs close to the station. Help would be close by if needed.

Would the extra thick walls on part of the ship be places that external cans be attached?
That would let the ship carry a lot more cargo. (Just an idea.)

At least Ish knows how to pick cargo. Does he still have his mother’s computer or remember
what he set up on it? That would give him a jump ahead of the others!

    Thanks for a great story!
    Sandy and John Crawford

  44. Josh says:

“Would the extra thick walls on part of the ship be places that external cans be attached?
That would let the ship carry a lot more cargo. (Just an idea.)”

My money (today at least) is on viewing ports that have been walled in. What’s going to differentiate Ish is the view from his ship.

  45. Jessel says:

Thank you Nate for bringing us two more episodes! I eagerly await more.

  46. Michael McCarthy says:

    cc: podiobooks

We’re impatient. I’m impatient. Everyone wants more and we want it now. Well that’s just a compliment hidden in the guise of our greed and desire.

What I don’t understand is the demand to rush to get sailing. Haven’t we seen the watch stander’s merry-go-round before? After 20+ years (more than half as an officer on watch) that part of the deep dark is rather mundane, no offense to the author. We’ve never seen what it really takes to get a ship in shape and earning shares like this before and I’m enjoying the discovery as much as day one as a quarter share. To paraphrase Alicia Alvarez, it’s the journey, not the destination, so enjoy the ride.

As much as I like Chief Gerhardt–I’m pretty sure I’d be asking her out if I met her–I’m taking to Gramps more than any other supporting character out there. He’s the kind of “no nonsense doesn’t mean no bullshit” kind of guy you want suck the knowledge and experience out of and then go have beers with. And I love the way Ish interacts and relates with him.

@Nate So back to your production schedule. If I sent you a few pounds of your favorite coffee, could we get a couple of all-nighters out of you and get a jump on the rest of the episodes? ;-) Seriously, thanks for all your hard work.

  47. delbert says:

Imagine armour-glass behind those huge side doors. What a view of a planetoid from the gaming tables. ;)

  48. Stefan says:

    Hi Nate,

Just wanted to tell you how much I love the share series. I’m an addict in the worst way and keep checking for new episodes as often as everyone else seems to be :) I’m fairly new to audio/podcast books, and only started listening after finding quarter share on Amazon, reading it, and then not being able to wait for more. I’m a firm believer in making sure that a great author is compensated, so I’ve made donations here and at podiobooks, and I encourage anyone else who loves these books to do the same. Now all I ask is that you give me more episodes before Monday ;)…..

  49. Ross says:

NATE NOTE: PLEASE DON’T DO THIS. IT CAN MESS UP THE RELEASE!!
