Double Share on iTunes

It’s taken a few days, but Double Share is now available at the iTunes Store as well as Podiobooks.

Any and all reviews you’d care to make there will help the cause as well.

Nate – iTunes is downloading episode 4 as I write this and just wanted to say “thanks again” for continuing Ishmael’s story. [SPOILER ALERT] It was interesting to see him become “merely mortal” in his performance in the Academy. Had he continued his uninterrupted string of 98%+ performance, he’d have breached the “infallible” barrier and become a cardboard cutout or, worse, a pulp hero. Thanks for keeping him real.

So…you’ve been quiet on this, so I’ll call you out: you mentioned some “other project” your were working months ago. Has this panned out any further. Are you still in embargo, or can you drop a few more hints?

All the best from the Springs –

  2. Nate says:

I still can’t really talk about it.

This month (July) I’m finishing up my part of it. It’s got the potential to be a “winning the lottery” scale of Win. If it all unfolds, you’ll be getting a lot more content from me because I’ll be able to quit the Day Job and write full time. Not in 2008, and maybe not 2009, but 2010 maybe. I *should* be able to spill the beans before that, but …

  3. Hade Debaillie says:

While I ‘d love to write a glowing review for Double Share on iTunes, it ‘s apparently impossible to create an account and log in to the Store if you don ‘t have a credit card. And while I gather that you ‘re somewhat of an oddity in the US if you ‘re over 19 with a job, but have no credit card, that ‘s not necessarily true where I live. So, sorry, but I can ‘t.

  4. Nate says:

Thanks, Hade. It’s one of the many things I dislike about iTunes. Don’t worry about it.

  5. steady says:

Wow and another 5 episodes ! Not to rush you but when might we expect more ;-)

  6. Nate says:

11 – 15 should be up in time for your weekend listening .. depending on the Podiobooks update cycle.

  7. Josh says:

Well, I’ve listened to episodes 1-10 twice through now.
I’m glad you don’t take as long as P.G. Holyfield to release episodes, I think I might suffer physical withdrawl symptoms.
These are the kind of books that my wife tells me I can’t read in paper because I stay up ’til 4 a.m. finishing them even though I have to get up for work at 6:00.

  8. adam says:

you get me through my manual laborers job for that i thank you. best book i have ever listened to i love this new one and can’t wait for the next installment

  9. Shawn says:

I have never posted a review on itunes before. I submitted a review for double share because i feel it is my duty. You have provided me and many others with many hours of entertainment. The Share series is by far the best books I have found in the Pod World and at the top of books I have read. Thank you very much Nathan for all the hard work. When you are published I will be buying the entire series.

  10. Nate says:

    Thanks, Shawn. Much appreciated!

  11. Kelly says:

I believe Shawn has stated exactly what I was thinking. From Share to South Coast I am truely blown away by your stories. I have read many many books over my lifetime and there are few I consider novels of exception. JRR Tolkien, Elizabeth Moon, Asimov, Piers Anthony, Anne McCaffrey are a few of the authors I consider to be worthy of my list and have since add you. I too will be purchasing your novels for myself and my son. Thank you for allowing us into your most incredible universe.

  12. Nate says:

    aww .. blush .. thanks.

Here’s hoping you don’t have to wait too long for that to happen :)

  13. James says:

Sometimes I have to wonder what Apple does so right, that they can afford to do so much wrong…

  14. Jordan C D says:

    11 – 15 are up and running.
    YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!
Here is my rant for joy

  15. Hade Debaillie says:

@James: that ‘s an easy one. It Just Works.

No, really. In the vast majority of cases I have come across, Apple products actually do “just work”. This is true, not in spite of the closed universe this company has created for its products to run in, but largely because of it. When your OS only has to run on maybe all of twenty different hardware combinations, well, OF COURSE it ‘s going to be more stable and – in most cases – probably faster than the competition. As a user, you won ‘t need to go chasing for obscure drivers in obscure corners of the web and/or wrestle your amalgam of system guts and peripherals into playing nicely with each other, let alone recompile your kernel to get support for one peripheral or other. As a third party application developer, there are that much less variables you need to take into account because of the transparent hardware situation.

Apple also has an OS that can run for weeks on end without noticeably slowing down, even on a laptop, which tends to be a handy feature if you ‘re one of those people who carries it around basically everywhere, and you need to have it up and running at moment ‘s notice. And – until further notice – you ‘re about 100% less likely of having your system overrun with all sorts of malware when you ‘re on a Mac than when you ‘re on a Windows box. OK, so most of the malware problems are caused by users doing stupid things. Plus, much of the stability and probably all of the long uptime are thanks to the BSD core. But most people don ‘t know that, and most people don ‘t care.

What ‘s true for the Mac platform is also true for other Apple ecosystems, such as that of iTunes-iPod. As long as you buy everything from Apple, including the player (iPod), the software (iTunes) and the music, everything really does work the way it ‘s supposed to. And even if you don ‘t, it works most of the time (ripped CD ‘s are fine, Amazon and other MP3 ‘s are fine, for instance).

And last, but I suspect not at all least: Apple knows how to pick the good designers. Both in software and in hardware design, their products tend to stand out. Sure, if you don ‘t like any one of maybe five separate case designs they usually offer at any given time, you ‘re out of luck. But then, that ‘s the closed universe again.

Sure, all kinds of people have all kinds of quibbles about Apple ‘s decisions on any given issue at any given time. To quote a famous man, one can please all of the people some of the time, or some of the people all of the time, but not all of the people all of the time. And I guess, when it comes down to it, the combination of all the things I summed up above, plus a few more, manage to please enough people enough of the time to make Apple a successful company. That ‘s really all there ‘s to it.

  16. Steady says:

So far so god I’ve listened through several times already but I recall you saying that there were going to be roughly 25 episodes and I am a bit concerned that it is 15 episodes in and they haven’t even finished the first jump :-S should I be worried or am I just being paranoid ?

    _,*’S’*,_

  17. Nate says:

It’s taking a long time to get to the top of the roller coaster … the descent will be swift and inevitable. :)

  18. Steady says:

Ahh now I understand, thanks Nate keep up the good work !!

  19. Lee in sunny Florida says:

Got 11-20 from podiobooks. That ought to cover commuting time for 2-3 days. Makes going to work seem like a good thing..
Oh… I think Hade has stated the Apple / PC thing pretty well . I dont love I tunes, but it works pretty well most of the time.

  20. Jordan C D says:

wow 16-20. NATE YOUR A PODCAST DUKE or king if you like that better.
I am right now trying to get my sig on a forum that i am sigh up for so that when some one click on the cover of a book (also in my sig) that they will be taken to the pod cast.

  21. Xenko says:

Sigh, I downloaded episodes 11 – 20 on Monday morning. I was done by that night. I’m not sure what you are putting in these podiobooks Nate, but whatever it is, it’s addicting.

Any idea when the final episodes will drop? I just can’t seem to get enough of Quarter/Half/Full/Double Share.

  22. Nate says:

They should drop by Friday — and then you’re back to waiting for the next book :)

  23. Anne says:

Hey, I live across the world in India, so I might be the first (or the 500th probably) to notice this, but there seems to be an error in the upload for episode 21 both on itunes and podiobooks. (Also is this the end of the book? I just realized that 25 episodes were mentioned somewhere…)

  24. Steady says:

yeah I got the error on episode 21 aswell so I’m gonna try getting it off podiobooks now I’ll update soon !!

    S

  25. Steady says:

nope the podiobooks link has a 404 error aswell :-(

    S

  26. Nate says:

It’s an error … We’re working on it.

  27. Anne says:

    thanks for getting it fixed!

  28. Steady says:

Thanks for fixing it I haven’t listened yet but are these the last chapters?

    S

  29. Nate says:

The book is complete with Episode 25 .. chapter 50 … there’s a special notice in the last episode.

    :)

  30. Peter says:

Finished double share. :) Im just wondering now what the name of the next book will be called. Because they have all been related to the amount of pay Ishmael has received at his post. And 1st and 2nd mates still receive double shares plus Ishmael still doesn’t have the qualifications for either one. The next step in the ladder seems to me to be “Captain’s Share” and i assume he would have to go through 1st and 2nd mates before that. So unless you skip and make him a captain (i wouldn’t be happy), you stop the trend of titles (i would be disappointed) or you figure something else out (i have no idea what). So please, share with us what in your genius you have come up with for the next book in the story of Ishmael Horatio Wang cause i sure hope it isnt done. Thanks

  31. Nate says:

It’s not done .. the Next Book will be Captain’s Share … just as we didn’t get to see Ishmael in College (yet) … we’re going to skip ahead 10 standard years or so and pick up Our Hero’s Story as he moves into the Cabin.

I’m not sure what that looks like yet.

  32. Mikael says:

This was a great book, i lisend to it strait, like i did with all the others, and i cant wahit fore the nexst one =)).

i realy hope you will continue to write becos right now you are one of my favoret writers rigt upp ther with
robert heinlein, david weber, lois mcmaster bujold, and meny meny more

    Best Of Luck
    //Mikael
    ——————–
    Ps
    Sorry for the bad enlich.

  33. Scott says:

Hmmm… Does that man the third book will be another skip ahead called Owner’s Share and feature Ish as the owner operator of an independent?

  34. Nate says:

Well, THAT is an interesting question because to be an owner, you only need a good bank. :)

There won’t be any *structural* reason to skip ahead from Captain to Owner.

  35. Mainframe says:

I just finished “Double Share”. Oh Nate, you are good!

  36. Peter says:

Thats slightly disappointing to not be able to see him as 1st and 2nd mates. But oh well im sure it will still be as good as the rest of them. Even though i do wonder what tid bits you will be adding to his profile that werent there before, like knowing Tai Chi. Good luck writing the next book im looking forward to it.

  37. Jill Z says:

I just finished Double Share. I have greatly enjoyed all your books and Double Share surely did not disappoint. In fact, it is the best so far. Nate, you have really grown as an author! This book was exciting without destroying the gentle properties of Quarter Share that I love so much. You really have a knack for making your characters believable and I thank you for letting me share a bit of their lives.

  38. Nate says:

    Thanks, Peter… i’m looking forward too :) …

Thanks Jill. I thought this one was the best, too. I learned a lot from South Coast. And the long break didn’t hurt either as I did a lot of reading and listening to others to see what I could do better and think about where I wanted to take this story.

  39. Steady says:

Was good but the ending was missing something but I’m not sure what :-S

    S

  40. Thanks for your kind comments on my blogpost about “Quarter Share,” by the way. Only trouble was, your comments were on a verbatim copy of my blogpost on the website that stole it. Sitll, I appreciate your (somewhat misdirected) appreciation.

  41. Nate says:

    Stupid scrapers.

I left another comment on YOUR post when I realized what it was. Sorry. I shoulda been more alert.

  42. Kris says:

I am joining the throng of people who want to thank you for your efforts. Like them, I have wizzed through the first 4 books and now am eagerly awaiting the next installment. I look forward to listening to ‘Captain’s Share’ Any indication when that will occur?

  43. Nate says:

The project on the table at the moment is the sequel to South Coast. That’ll get done first and then I’ll get to Captain’s Share. I really hope to have all of them done this year.

Realistically speaking — I doubt that it’ll happen so long as I have my day job.
