36 Responses to Ship’s Roster: Lois McKendrick

  1. Ada Kerman says:

I take it names in italics are changes since the previous book? If so, why is Sarah Krug still in italics for the _Full Share_ roster?

  2. Nate says:

Obviously because I’m a clod who can’t keep even simple details straight. Thanks for point out my failings. :)

    I fixed it.

  3. Funtime says:

Since Ish is half share in book two, wouldn’t that make him an Engineman instead of a Machinist?

  4. Nate says:

Yup. You’re right. Fixin’ it now

  5. Funtime says:

Actually, as I’m thinking about it, I wonder if the handbook is wrong. Which is supposed to be the full share position? Machinist or Engineman?

  6. Funtime says:

After listening to a few more episodes, I am convinced (again) that the handbook is correct. :)

  8. Theyain says:

Dang it. And here I was (seriously) planning to figure out and write all this down for reference. Well, it appears you took the fun out of that.

  9. Dan says:

What Sucks, I listened to book 4 not knowing there was 1,2 or 3… crap… Still great story!

  10. PavementPilot says:

I was just relistening to the entire series again for the umpteenth time and caught a strange anomoly. Sarah Krugg joins the crew and is from the South Coast. Is she related to Otto or Benjamin Krugg? Daughter or granddaughter of Otto?

  11. Nate says:

Why, yes. Yes, she is. :)

  12. evil genius says:

I was thinking about all the jobs aboard and started to think who does the laundry. someone has to clean the ship suits. Isn’t that a strewards duty, and who does the regular cleaning. i hate when my brian focuses on the details.

Love the story thou, I’m listening to it for the 9th time all the way thought. It’s like white noise to me, and helps me focus on my work.

  13. Megan Pawlak says:

I assumed someone from engineering or environmental takes care of laundry (otherwise it would have to be a stationer who does it, not anyone from on the ship’s roster). I also assumed it was something they did at every port. Unload dirty laundry and swap it for clean as part of ship’s expense. So the actual laundry would be on station where there’s more room and resourses. Same, I would think, of sheets and the replacing of depleted soap, shampoo, etc.

  14. Michael Lovelace says:

When are the rest of your books going to be on kindle.

  15. Nate says:

As soon as I can get them thru the editing process, Michael.

Half Share *should* be out now but I’ve been delayed in the editing process. It’s my fault but I’m very confident that Half Share will be available by Thanksgiving.

The rest are in the pipeline for production over the next couple of years – one every six months. It seems slow when you’re waiting for the books, I know, but it’s fast when you’re trying to produce them.

  16. Richard says:

relistened to Quarter share through Full Share. I still did not hear whether Pip received a whelkie and what kind.

  17. Nate says:

@richard – if he had, I’m sure you would have heard. He didn’t.

  18. HJACK says:

I fell in love with your Universe. I prefer the printed word but there’s no way I can wait so I’m diving into the audio books. Please type faster :-)

  19. james says:

have just gone through the rosters for the lois and the billy theres a mallory on both any relation between the two???

  20. Nate says:

    Not intentionally.

  21. Ralph F says:

The covers of the eBooks give us a clue to the Lois McKendrick’s appearance; have you ever prepped/commissioned a full layout/schematic of the ship (or even a basic plan view)?

  22. Nate says:

I actually *had* a graphic built, complete with the “yard brochure” for the craft, but with the editing changes from the book (changing the length from 200 to 600 meters) people were complaining that the graphic was wrong. I took it down until I can re-draw it.

  23. David says:

I just read Quarter Share and I am reading Half Share now. Looking at the crew manifest, the first thing I thought was “Where is the doctor or medic?” Did these people never get sick in the “Deep Dark”?

  24. Nate says:

    Keep reading, David.

    The answer is coming.

  25. Heath says:

Trying to figure out how many shares there are on the Lois, but I think they are listed on this page by their qualifications not by actual position. Basically I want to see the shipnet report of how many positions there are available on the ship, would that be somewhere else on this site?

  26. Nate says:

all the officers are double share, except the captain who also has her captain’s share.

the ranks give the clues to share.

All specialists are full as are Able Spacer and Machinist.

I’d have to look to see where the other ranks fall… but no, I don’t have that broken out. If you look at the rank structure in the Spacer’s Handbook, you can figure it out easily enough.

  27. Roger C says:

Just finished reading “Quarter Share” (Kindle) and thoroughly enjoyed it. I was wondering if you every thought of commissioning a graphic artist to render your characters? Judging from the covers I have seen on line, you have some contacts. Would really enjoy seeing how you envision them.

  28. The Captain says:

    No, I can’t say that I have.

There have been some people who wanted to do the graphic novel versions, but so far, nobody’s actually stayed with the idea long enough to get artwork up.

Visualizing the characters has remained an exercise in individual imagination so far. :D

  29. Robert Hoving says:

In Full Share Charles Cloby is a Spec2 not Spec3.

  30. David says:

I’m re-listening to FS for the zillionth time, and noticed something. Fong Xi Pa is on brow watch duty when the ship is in Betrus, but he’s a Spec 3 ship handler. With six watch standers, they should have more than enough crew to staff the brow when the ship is in port, without having to resort to poaching from the bridge crew.

    Just sayin’.

  31. Hopeful steward says:

Man these books should be a movie or miniseries. You are awesome. Keep writing!

  32. Jane says:

Just wanted to say a Big thank you for so many hours of pure joy and relaxation in your books. I’m a nurse in a big hospital and relish these wonderful distractions from the real world. Listening to your podiocasts on my long drives to and from work has been such a pleasure. Thank you a million times. I look forward to all future projects of yours.

  33. James says:

Why is Ishmael listed as Wang not Wong?

  34. Skipper says:

Because his name is spelled “Wang” but pronounced “Wong.”

It’s actually a plot point in the stories.

There’s a long history of this kind of thing – names spelled one way but pronounced another. It’s particularly prevalent in the Anglicization of names that aren’t spelled with latin characters–like most Asian name from China, Japan, and even Russian.

  35. J R says:

    I R says,
Coming back to the question of laundry, the author uses the relatively common sci-fi literary black box of the “fresher”. One can only imagine what this labor and word saving device actually is. Cloths and towels automagically we are lead to believe go in when dirty or used and we are left with the obviousness of the term for our explanation and the story moves on. Hope this helps.

On this note I would like congratulate the author on his depiction of faster than light travel. It’s simple but effective. Taken for granted and no more experiential than the blink of an eye. Burlson space and the Goldilocks zone create a cosmology that is perfectly understandable in our human frame of reference. Lovely.
