Latest Update

Sickness and misery.

That’s been the lot here and it’s gotten in the way of my grand plans.

Ridan has taken their versions of the ebooks down so people around the world (Germany, Australia) are getting told “Not available.” It’s nothing personal, folks. It’s everybody because I still don’t have my versions ready to go. With any luck my medical problems will now be healing and I can proceed. There’s only one more medical problem for me that needs work but that’ll probably hold off until the new year.

Captain’s Share is still with the editor and as soon as I can, that’ll be coming out with Owner’s Share right behind it. I’m anxious to get these books done so I can start on something new. As it is, everything is backed up.

Sorry about that, but I haven’t forgotten about you.

Take care of yourself first! Nothing is more important than your health. I hope everything heals well and that the new year brings you progress in both health and writing :)

  2. PKMorris says:

Nathan I’m sure I speak for many when I say we would rather you get fully better than rush into giving us content in the short term and put at risk our chances of enjoying your work down the road. It’s worth the wait.

  3. TheSFReader says:

Like Nia says, health (and Family) takes precedence over everything else !

  4. ricardo says:

    Mr. Lowell
I am sorry to hear about your health. I hope your recovery will be complete and in time to celebrate the new year. Please forget about us, your selfish readers, and focus on your recovery. Health issues have the power to bring us back to the basics and sometimes teach us what matters most (but sometimes they just sucks!).

  5. Jeff Savage says:

Captain, take care of yourself, first. While all of us want your books as soon as possible, we surely do not want them at the expense of your health. We want you to continue writing for many, many, years. Do not stress, get the books out at your own pace. We will be waiting, and wishing you a quick, and full, recovery. Thanks for the gifts you have given us through your writing. Thanks, Jeff

  6. Lance says:

Enjoy the holidays and your family, and like everyone else says, get yourself better before you worry about your books.

  7. Jean Eelma says:

Speaking from recent experience, getting older stinks.
As a younger person, I thought about writing as a profession. Despite my love of writing, wasn’t going to happen. I was neither imaginative enough nor rich enough to go that route. I remain in awe of those people who could make it happen. Keep up the great writing, and don’t let your body get in the way more than it must. I would second, or third, those who suggest kickstarter as a funding source.

  8. John Hill says:

Best wishes. Get well soon. My son and I look forward to reading and listening to more of your stories. Here’s hoping you have a healthy new year!

  9. Angie says:

Please concentrate on healing and full recovery! Be well.

  10. Steven says:

We do not want the Books at the expense of your health. We need you to be around for the next 4 or 5 Ish books Hint hint or any other in that universe . Ill just listen to the stories for like the 100th time on my I pod Sending prayers for ya

    Steve

  11. Mike Johnson says:

Plenty of time to attend to business when your health is
restored. We will expect, of course, that you get well enough to provide us stories for many decades to come!

  12. Jake Liebhaber says:

Get well!! Don’t worry about us “crazy” fans until you are better. We will wait.

And thanks for your wonderful prose.

  13. Cal Peters says:

Get well soon, Cap’n. We’re pullin’ for ya.

  14. Scrub says:

Take care of yourself sir! While we all patiently anticipate your books, your health is of a much greater concern.

  15. Sean says:

    Nathan,

Great to see Quarter Share available again! Congratulations on the progress.

Pity there’s no way to remove the Ridan links. Searching for the title shows them, first. It took me a couple minutes to find the new version, and I kept looking only because I saw in the tommw comments that it was out.

Very glad to buy the new version and help pay those darned dentists!

  16. Sean says:

Nathan, sorry to report but there’s something odd with the QS tags. Every time it switches to italics the font size doubles. This is on an iPad 2 with the latest Kindle app.

On the bright side, the font drops back immediately when it reverts from italics. So maybe it’s in the CSS?

And on the “there has to be a silver lining” side… If you fix the tag you can fix the 20 km Louis reference…

  17. Leind says:

Get well and take your time. I’m pretty sure the world is not ending in 2012, so 2013 should be soon enough to read the next books.

  18. The Captain says:

That italics thing is driving me crazy.

It only appears that way on eInk devices and I can’t see any way to fix it.

  19. The Captain says:

    Duh.

A simple CSS declaration of the italics style did it.

    >.< Thanks for pointing it out.

  20. Ogre_in_Barrow says:

I hope your recovery is quick and complete!! Also, may your holidays be wonderful as well as restful.

  21. Catherine says:

Everyone is right! You need to focus on your health. Just think of all your rabid fans as sending you all the positive energy that goes along with waiting excitedly for more books!!

  22. Michael says:

Hope you get better soon. Happy holidays to you and your family!

  23. Fred says:

I wonder, do we have to re-buy books 1 – 4 to read the changes you make, or can we just delete the book from kindle and re download and the changes show up?

  24. Ben says:

Looking forward to the upcoming books. Merry Christmas!

  25. The Captain says:

Fred, the changes aren’t that extensive — if you discount the cover and artwork. The story stays *mostly* the same.

But you’d have to rebuy them. I’m considering an omnibus edition for the first three books and we can probably arrange something for previous buyers :)

  26. David Macfarlane says:

    Dear Dr Lowell,

Congratulations on your resilience in striking out for another publisher (or at least editor); and all the best for your recovery.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the three books available through Amazon so far. I downloaded the ‘new’ Quartershare’ and was not charged; for the ‘new’ ‘Halfshare’ I was charged. I had a long on-line discussion with an Amazon representative, who indicated that the new publications would be treated as separate and new books. As far as Amazon customers buying the new versions are concerned be aware that this seems to be Amazon’s policy.

I am not passing judgement on whether this is right or wrong, just what I have been told so others will not be surprised.

  27. Dale Kraemer says:

Hope you have a much healthier new year in 2013 ! Looking forward to Captain’s Share and Owners Share. Will “South Coast” be available in Kindle Ebook format ? Sarah Krugg got me interested in learning more about the South Coast Shamans.

  28. The Captain says:

I need to get South Coast thru a full editing run. I have a cover for it already so I’m just trying to get the text in shape.

  29. The Captain says:

I’m surprised you got the new “Quarter Share” for free. According to Amazon’s ToS, I’d have expected people would have to purchase the books again since it’s a new release from a different publisher. Basically–it’s a different book.

The *story* isn’t substantially changed, but by their rules it’s a new book.

People should NOT re-purchase the books. Nothing in the new releases changes anything that happens in the later books. They just read better. (JMO. YMMV)

  30. Pam Smith says:

Just another rapid fan, who wishes you the best in your recovery in 2013. Though, I’d love to have the next book to read, your health comes first.

  31. Brett says:

Is there any update on the release date for Captain’s Share, etc?

  32. David says:

“The *story* isn’t substantially changed, but by their rules it’s a new book.”

    Oh, you tease.

Now I *need* to know how it’s different!

  33. Sprocket says:

You’ve give us so much already, that for anyone to rush you would be less than grateful. Hoping you make a full return to good health, and that you are buoyed by the knowledge that you’ve given a great deal of reading pleasure to so many! Good luck with everything.
