Coffee Anyone?

Hey, Crew?

One of the perennial questions I get is “Where can I buy Djartmo Arabasti? How about Sarabanda Dark?”

As a matter of fact, I’m in negotiations with a local roaster to provide exactly those coffees as a custom blend. One question that really needs to be answered is “How many?”

The coffee will be about $12 plus shipping for a standard 12 oz bag of fresh roasted, whole beans, but I think the price comes down to around $30 for a three pound bag. I’m not sure on the price and it’ll depend on the final mix but that’s about what the roaster currently offers for one-off custom blends. I might be able to negotiate something better than that if we have enough volume and the blends aren’t too expensive.

Bottom line, this is The Good Stuff, folks. I’ve sampled his work and it’s spectacular.

If you’re interested and likely to be willing to drop the dime on this, would you leave a comment? It’s not a purchase commitment or anything. Just a rough gauge of the interest.

Thanks, crew.

[Update: I talked to Keith again today at the farmer’s market and he’s hooking me up with his “label guy” to do some special labels for this. I also sampled what I’m pretty sure will be the base coffee for the Sarabanda Dark. Keith is amazed and amused by the whole idea and I’ll be going to visit next week for some sample tastings with various blends. This is going to be epic. -Nate Aug 27, 2011]

    Kenny,

I’m meeting with the roaster and artist this week, I hope.

It’ll be well before the holiday buying season! :D

    I’m thinking .. maybe .. three weeks? A month?

    That’s my goal.

  2. James says:

I would be very interested in buying some Sarabanda Dark skipper although i would have to go with the 3lb bag myself

  3. Brian G says:

Yes sar I would be game as well

  4. Lil Hibdon says:

I think this is an excellent idea. Looking forward to having a cuppa of that special blend coffee while enjoying your morning podcast. I keep telling my husband John we should be walking with you but it is so nice just sitting in our recliners, drinking coffee and listening to you talk. lol

  5. DDog says:

I am all over themed coffee!

  6. BigMac says:

    Hi Nate,

I would be interested in a pound of each blend.
The clincher would be the shipping costs to South Africa.
Any ideas if that would be possible and at what cost?

    Regards,
    BigMac

  7. Quonundrum says:

Deal me in, Nate. Looking forward to it.

    Best,
    Charlie

  8. Jim Caplan says:

I’m in but only if I don’t have to clean the pot with vinegar :-). (a dishwasher tablet left in the pot overnight works best.)

  9. Neil Duane says:

    Sound Great

  10. annoyance says:

It’s just slightly more expensive than $tartbuck$ in the grocery. $30 for premium coffee just like Ish makes… I’m in for the 3# bag of Sarabanda Dark. Maybe a nice gift set Quarter Share, 2 Sarabanda coffee mugs and a 12oz. bag of coffee.

Is this going to be a one shot deal, or will you roast a batch up at regular intervals?

  11. memine says:

Getting anxious for coffee. Talking about it on your tommw gets the coffee juices flowing. Mmmmmmm

  12. Susan says:

I’d love a bag or two of each but, as with others, the shipping cost would be the issue. I take exception to paying more to ship something to Canada than I’m paying for the item I’m purchasing!

  13. Betsy says:

I might be interested if it is shade-grown and fair trade. Any ideas on that?

  14. Nate says:

Yes to both. It’s part of their branding. It’s the only coffee they get in.

  15. Greg says:

    Bottle Brush and Vinegar Ready!
This will be fun to listen (and sip) all over again! I just hope I can get the bean grind right for the grav setting. :)

  16. Cameron says:

    I’ll certainly consider it, Sar!

  17. I would definitely be interested!

  18. Make sure you let us know when we can place orders. I’m in for a 3# bag of each.

  19. Joe says:

    Im interested.

  20. Geordon says:

I’d definitely be interested, but my level of commitment would depend somewhat on the profile of the coffee. Can you tell us anything about it at the moment? What region is the blend highlighting, etc.

Arabasti, SArabanda Dark… I want either way. Now I need to get a Federated Freight mug. :D

  21. Nate says:

Sarabanda Dark will be a dark roasted Indian Malabar as the base.

Djartmo Arabasti will be a Guatamalan Huehuetenango as base. (I think)

  22. William Katzell says:

If it’s a coffee that tastes like it smells (and not as bitter/burnt tasting as most, including St*rbucks), I’d likely not only be into getting a couple of bags for myself and friends, but I’d be a repeat customer. :)

  23. Marc says:

I’d kill for some Sarabanda Dark right about now…half way through the semester and already staying up much later than I should…the aroma still wafts through my head…but what about Moscow Morning?

  24. Dave D says:

I am SO in for a 3 pound bag of each! Where do I buy?

  25. Any update on the coffee?

PS — I hope you get over your cold soon!

  26. The Captain says:

    No.

And I need to call them to find out what’s happening.

  27. Denise says:

Was so looking forward to a 3lb bag of Djartmo Arabasti, any news???

  28. The Captain says:

    Yes!

I have labels – waiting for the roaster to get his shipments in from Costa Rica :)

    Ssshh.

  29. Jeff Doherty says:

How close are we to being able to buy coffee from you? When I first heard about you sourcing blends to make them, I was so excited. I love coffee and that was part of the appeal in the books for me. I will definitely buy both when they are ready. And I know there are some other Australian fans who will buy some to.

    Cheers,

    Jeff

Both me and my dad (who I also got addicted to your Solar Clipper series) would be very interested.

  32. The Captain says:

This is a project that’s fallen off my table.

Maybe it’s time to revisit it.
