MileHi Here I Come

I kept wondering why everybody was leaving comments on the Derelict post … then I realized I hadn’t left a new post here since June.

Yikes. Sorry about that.

If you missed the news, I was diagnosed with ADD the week before my 62nd birthday. It was rather a shock but the good news is that it’s broken the logjam.

Since that time I’ve converted and ordered the galley proofs for

Double Share
Captain’s Share
Owner’s Share
Ravenwood

Only two books left to convert but they’ll have to wait until next week. I’m taking the paperback Double Share with me to mark up during the convention (assuming I get some time to tome) and my goal is to clear all this old work away by year end. It has to go before I can focus on new stuff. Every time I try to write something I look at the board and get blown off course.

The answer is “Clear it.”

So it goes. In January I’ll be Guest of Honor at COSine down in Colorado Springs but today I’m off to MileHiCon and the first time I’ve been out of town since last MileHi.

You have no idea how much I need this.

I’ll try to post more often to keep everybody in the loop. I just need to get the task added to my To Do list…

Thanks for the update on how your doing with your back log.

Welcome back Mr. Lowell! You’ve been missed.
You mentioned health problems and then disappeared for a few months… Raises a concern or two.:)

I started reading your work in September (though I’ve known of you for a while), and editorial things aside, the Trader Tales series is really quite magnificent. I read a *lot* of science fiction, and count among my favorites Gene Wolfe, Roger Zelazny, Kristine Kathryn Rusch, Robert Heinlein and others. But rarely (if ever) have I been moved to read an entire series through from start to finish, and then read it again out of order, completing the entire thing twice in a single month. There’s just something special about the story of Ishmael Wang, and I thank you for telling it to me.

Part of it comes from a compelling story, and part of it comes from the kinship I feel toward Ishmael–the guy thinks like me, and has some of the same issues I’ve always had (over analitics, as one example; a constant desire to improve the small details so the whole will improve organically, for another).

And also, some really tight world building. I now very much want to open a diner called “Over Easy”, and let all the employees profit share (as quarter shares, of course!).

After finishing Owner’s Share a few minutes ago, and the entire Trader Tales series in one week, I’m left with all kinds of mixed yet fantastic emotions. I look forward to reading the rest of your works that I can get my hands on and any future endeavors you finish. Thank you, truly, for the adventures I took with Ishmael and the rest of the wonderfully rich cast of characters. Safe voyage, my friend.

Wishing you fair (solar) winds on your travels this fall and winter. ADD is not your fault, and it can be one of your strengths. Thanks for posting again, and hope you’ll share more news, either good or not-so-good, when you can.
