Half Share

Well, we’re two months late, but Half Share is up in Kindle format. The paperback will be along as soon as it falls out of the pipeline on the Amazon end.

We’ve already started on Full Share in order to get back on our production target of April, 2011, and might even manage to get Ravenwood in over the summer.

A lot of people have asked for a “pre order link” or some such thing but our choice not to do that was actually deliberate, not an oversight. I don’t want my books listed until they’re actually available. If you can see them, then you can buy them. It’s probably bad business and might cost me some sales, but the books will be available for a long time. Sorry for any inconvenience that causes people, but I want to make sure we’re not publishing vapor-text.

Given how long it took me to get my act together on this one, that’s probably a good thing.

I LOVE the cover! Can’t wait to get my hands on this one too. Thanks for all the hard work and wonderful stories.

  2. Michael S. says:

Oh! Wow! The cover is absolutely gorgeous. I’m excited, and I can’t wait to order my copy! Thanks sar =)

  3. Duncan Hilchie says:

Wow, that is amazing. Do you have an ETA on the special edition signed hard cover? So long and thanks for all the fish, err I mean thanks for a great story.

  4. Sean says:

Outstanding! Thank you – will be haunting the Apple store now! And… Please do let us know when the signed hardbounds are due. This series gets read in ebook form, but will be treasured in hard copy as well in our house.

And a well done to Riden – simply beautiful cover.

  5. Jeremy says:

Thank you Sar. Love the whelkie on the cover!! Can’t wait to get my hands on our copy

  6. Nate says:

No ETA on the paper or the hardcover — sometime in January for the hardbound, I’m sure, but early or late.. dunno

  7. Kaye Crady says:

Thank you thank you! It’s already on my Kindle ready to read over the holiday! I agree with previous posters, the cover is outstanding.

  8. David says:

Wow, great shot of the welkie. Exactly how I imagined it. I always loved the analogy of Ish being the dolphin – the mammal who lives in the sea; in its element yet somehow not really.

  9. Geoff says:

Agree with everyone about the cover art. Glad to see the book out in Kindle format. any eta on EPUB??

  10. Nate says:

Geoff, the EPUB files will be up shortly. Ridan’s moving as fast as they can with them. It’ll be on Smashwords as soon as we can get it together to do so.

Thanks, Jamming, and the rest of you. It’s gratifying to get such positive feedback.

  11. Geoff says:

Thanks Nate. It’s looking to be a very good Xmas for all your fans.
I hope you and your family have a wonderful Xmas.

  12. Ken says:

Wow! What a great start! I love your books and cant wait to hear more. Thanks again Nate!

  13. Jarle says:

Thanks! Bought it :) Love your work, it’s so great.

  14. Shannon Farrell says:

Nathan, it sounds like Ridan has their hands full, but do you know if they’ll be updating their website to list Half Share as coming soon and/or offer email notification when it’s released? Thanks and keep up the great work!

  15. Gail says:

    A whelkie! Nice work.
Thanks for the head’s up on the latest thing. What a lot you have going on, how exciting!
Publication takes as long as it takes. The only time I have trouble remembering you have a life is when you are uploading a new story to Podiobooks!

  16. Trevor says:

I can’t wait to read this. I am sure it will be worth the wait.

  17. Jamey says:

“Given how long it took me to get my act together on this one, that’s probably a good thing.” If it were only “this one”, then yes, it could be said you took a long time to get your act together. However, it’s a signficant confluence of events in your life all coming together that quite reasonably meant you’ve needed a good bit of time to get adjusted. I think, now that you’re getting set in the mode to write full-time, you’ll end up quite a well-off author soon enough!

I’m just considering now who’s going to play Ishmael in the movie releases, and which role you’re going to play for a cameo. Maybe Spec3 Francis Gartner would be perfect? Not a huge amount of lines, but visible, and there for the first three movies…

  18. Megan P. says:

Oh man, movie releases…I frequently have cinegraphic (is that a word?) images in my head when I read these books. Maybe he should play someone like Mr. Maxwell. :) He doesn’t have a lot of face time, but he’s there and important and I’m pretty sure in all three books.

  19. Laith says:

That cover is great. Can’t wait until the paperback is available.

  20. Chess Griffin says:

Yeah, wowzers, that cover is beautiful. I love the Whelkie. Can’t wait to get a signed hardcover to go along with my QS copy. Thanks for the update!

  21. Ian Macfarlane says:

Will you be signing the paperback copies like you did with Quarter Share?

  22. norman728 says:

hurray! now i just have to wait until KOBO Books gets it ( i got Quarter Share that way)

  23. Michael says:

I had more visualised a tv series with J. J. Abrams at the helm.. That being said I am not sure that there is enough dramatic tension to drive a movie especially in the first few books. Might have to plug the first three into a single movie…. Which I was heading towards tv over movie :-)

And with todays pacing for movies… But then maybe it would bring character driven sci/fi stories to the big screen!

  24. Meason says:

Amazon has your book for sale!!!!!! HALF SHARE !!!!!!
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004GUSA02/ref=yml_dp
i have starated reading it, and once again – i am having a hard time putting it down!!!!!!!

just thought i would let all your fans know that it is available!

  25. Mark Roberts says:

Awesome! Noticed it is not in the iBooks store yet. Do you know if it will be added there as well? That is where I found Quarter Share.

Also looking forward to getting a signed copy of Half Share. :)

  26. Nate says:

Yes, it’ll be there. I just don’t know what the lead time on that release is. Ridan tells me all the files are out to the various channels and it’s only a matter of time.

  27. Sean says:

I have to admit – I simply couldn’t wait for HS to pop up in the iBook store, and got the kindle version. A most worthy continuation of QS – and I’m eager to read the rest. Heck, you may even convince me to listen to them!

If you ever need some insight into Officer Candidate School to write about Ish’s experiences let me know! I’ll be glad to spin a few sea stories.

And… Cover is superb, but it STILL doesn’t do justice to the story!!!

  28. Michael S. says:

    @Sean
If you haven’t listened to them yet, you are sorely missing out. Dr. Lowell’s narration is simply fantastic. Also, you get the benefit of hearing them long in advance of reading them. Just think, you’ll know what’s going on lots sooner :)

  29. Mark Roberts says:

I have to agree with Michael. I actually found Quarter Share after purchasing an iPad in the iBook store. As I’m sure Dr. Lowell can attest, I’ve been pestering him pretty hard about Half Share. :) Last week I downloaded the podcasts for Quarter Share and you are correct, I have a 30 minute commute to work each day so I’ve been listening to Quarter Share each way. Burned through most of it already.

  30. Barb says:

Thank you so much for the notification. I’m more of a reader than a listener. That being said, I just inhaled Half Share. Twas wonderful. Great work!

  31. Robert Jackson says:

Love the cover art!! Was wondering what aircraft that window was actually in? I’m an aircraft mechanic and those things just interest me. :-)

  32. Jamey says:

@Robert Jackson – I’m thinking said window is a render, and may never have actually existed except as a file in a computer. It’s amazing what a good ray tracer will do.

  33. Kese says:

Just followed your link to download the Kindle version. Can’t wait to read it.
Interestingly enough, when I search your name or Half Share in the Kindle store it doesn’t come up with the book, only Quarter share. When I searched in the book section it had Half Share (sold out) and the option to tell the author I wanted to read it on the Kindle. Long story short, thank you for the link– and have a great Christmas!

  34. Nate says:

We’re having a little bit of trouble getting the Amazon store working. The “Sold Out” thing is because the files haven’t cleared the pipeline yet. It’s not so much “Sold Out” as “Not really available yet.” It should read “It’s coming! Hang in there.”

The search SHOULD be getting better. I noticed that it shows up on my author profile page now.

Ah, well. We try our best but the bottlenecks will get us.

About a half dozen people have asked about “other than Kindle” ebook formats. The files are on their way to Smashwords where you’ll be able to get any format you want. As soon as it clears, I’ll post a link.

Also, we’ll have signed copies available as soon as my case-o-books shows up. And the limited edition signed hardcovers will be along in the new year. We’re trying to get these paper and e-versions going right now. That has a priority.

  35. Kenn says:

I like the TV idea. Heck even 10 min Internet episodes would be awsome, something like what the guild does. I am seeing Nate as frank the cook in the dinner resturants Ish is drawn to. While JJ Abrahms is genius with mot things i think he would corrupt this perfect world of the solar clipper.

And the welkie is much bigger than i pictured but exactly what i pictured.
Keep up the awsomness Nate, it brings alot of joy to alot of people.

  36. The cover looks amazing!!! It’s so cool to see a cover of a book when I’m already very familiar with the story. An interesting experience. I can’t wait to put it on my shelf next to Quarter Share! Thanks for all your great work Nate.

  37. norman728 says:

Love the cover I always wondered what the welkie’s(?) looked Liked. can’t wait to see it on the ebook (I just don’t have the Kindle)

  38. Ari B. says:

Is it possible to get a signed version, like with Quarter Share?

  39. Karl says:

Wonderful. Bought it and read it in less than 24 hours. Glad to see some new blood in the independent fiction arena, with so many clever ideas. Now only four or eight months to wait for the next one…!

  40. Phillip says:

I downloaded “Half Share” to my Kindle on Dec. 29 and had it read by Dec. 30. I couldn’t put it down. More please.

  41. Nate says:

    Full Share is coming. Yay.

It’s going to be April before its out. Boo.

But you could listen to it in audio for free. Yay.

A lot of people don’t like audio books. Boo.

At least you don’t have to wait a year or more because I’m not publishing with a mainstream press! YAY!

  42. NormHart says:

Any idea when Half Share will be out on Smashwords?
I’ve mentioned that it was coming in a couple of forums and got bombarded with “where is it?”‘s.
I’ve read it twice on my Kindle and have to say… Yay!

  43. Nate says:

@normhart – smashwords *should* be right along — I’ll check with Ridan.

    @simon – excellent. about darn time :)

  44. Paperback seems to be now available for order… :-)

    http://www.ridanpublishing.com/half_share.html

Hopefully the Hardcover version won’t be too far behind :-)

  45. Dan says:

Number six on the Kindle SciFi charts. That’s just cool. Congrats Nate!

  46. Sean says:

Any updates on the signed hard covers? I’m slowly working through the podcasts, and read QS and HS in ebook, but… Some books just deserve to be treasured

    Thank.

  47. Nate says:

the HS cover and layout is waiting printer approval … it’s coming but the focus is getting the paperbacks available. I’m waiting to see one of my own — soon, very soon.

  48. david says:

OK, just how big IS the Lois? The audiobook says the spine is 144 meters but the Kindle version says 528 meters (Chapter 9). Did someone run the numbers and decide she had to be bigger in order to support all those containers?

  49. Nate says:

@david – the latest kindle version will be the canon and the ship’s length over all is 600m. The problem was the term “leviathan.” The editor didn’t think a ship that was only 650′ long could be considered “leviathan” … I’ve stood on the bow of a 600′ ship and looked aft, and I have to say I’m thinking the term holds, but after several months of back and forth on it, we compromised on the current configuration. I’ll be adjusting the supporting documents.

  50. david says:

Fair enough. Might want to update https://solarclipper.com/sc-lois-mckendrick/ then
