Cape Grace

Yes, it’s coming! November means NaNoWriMo and you’ll be able to follow along with my progress by clicking the icon on the left. I’ll post occasionally here on the Trader’s Diary, and you’ll be able to see my word counts on Twitter as well.

I’m so looking forward to this!

  1. I’ve got a project that I’m doing for NaNoWriMo. All I can say it’s WIP Title is “Solar Clipper 1”. There is a reason why it’s called that. But I won’t explain Publicly what it is yet.

  2. matt says:

I am so excited. I really enjoyed South Coast last year, and I am looking forward to this year.

  3. Annoyance says:

Thanks Nathan for another book in this universe. I too will attempt NaNoWriMo in November. kinda scared…

  4. Victoria says:

Oeh ! Cape Grace, I was hoping you would write that for NaNoWriMo ! Can’t wait.

    Am contemplating participating myself….

  5. Russ says:

Yeah, day #1. I’m only at 1755 words, but I’m sure Nathan somewhere around 5k in the same amount of time. Can’t wait Cape Grace, considering the author, it should be pretty good.

  6. Nate says:

You’re ahead of me. I’ve only got a little under 1300 words at the moment, and I haven’t had a chance to write today at all! Grrr.

  7. Daniel says:

I’m really looking forward to Cape Grace. Nathan, your other books are permanent residents on my iPod and I
listen to them regularly trying to catch things I might have missed on previous listenings.

Best of luck and may you have much success.

  8. Nate says:

OK the month is half over and I’ve only written the first (very short) chapter.

    This doesn’t bode well! :(

  9. DianeJ says:

You know, much as I love your writing, I’d rather know you wrote it without giving up your real life. I am sending good thoughts your way so you can have time for your books, but, if it doesn’t happen, we will all live. We may forgive you someday, too. :P

  10. I look forward to your book, but it’s understandable if writers block or time gets in the way….

  11. Quandmeme says:

I enjoyed double share but South Coast is still my favorite. Really looking forward to cape grace. Nothing on Twitter or on the nanowrimo site. Any news for us.

  12. Nate says:

    Oh! Yes. Sorry …

Fail Whale on NaNo for me this year. I’ve been sandbagged by my day jobs to the point where every waking moment was taken up with stuff that wasn’t writing Cape Grace.

I feel bad, but the upside is that I’ve developed some stuff in the last month that will help a lot of people when it comes to science and technology education, I hope. I’m working with some people from NASA to develop a Lunar Sciences Lab and just starting to scope out some work with the University of Texas in Austin on some oceanography research stuff. The university is talking about flying me to the National Science Foundation to meet with some of their education people about it – maybe get some funding to expand the work more.

I realize this is small consolation to you all, but it’s Big News in my Day Job World and falls under the category of Doing Good Works. Because of the things I’ve been doing in the last month, a lot of people who are blind and visually impaired will have access to some learning resources that have so far been closed to them.

I hope you understand and I WILL get Cape Grace done. Eventually.

  13. Peter says:

If thats the stuff your doing on a regular basis then your day job is more important than writing your books. (IMHO) Congrats on doing well there at least November wasnt wasted, you didnt sit around and watch TV when you should have been writing (like me). Good luck on both your day job and Cape Grace. :)

  14. quandmeme says:

Congrats, Nate. We were cheering for you on the NanoWriMo, and not that you’re sharing about RL, we’ll cheer for you in that too. Sounds like RL is rewarding for you, good on ya.

  15. SynapticJam says:

Too bad about your NaNoWriMo outing for this year… I tried it for the first time and crossed the 50K mark on the 23rd and finished out the month at 53K. Compensating Controls… Really looking forward to Cape Grace though.

  16. Holly says:

Real life does get in the way for all of us, on a fairly regular basis. Just glad to know that you are alive and well – was starting to get worried!

  17. Nate says:

Thanks, everybody, for your kind words and understanding.

This book is next on the hit parade and I *will* get it done!

  18. A.W. Ford says:

Oops! What happened, Nate? Mid-December, no updates and NANO has your word count at just under 3000. Me thinks maybe you need to give us some clues on how to motivate you, sir! You have avid, addicted followers to service here :) Just playing with you, bro. Love your work and looking forward to Cape Grace

  19. A.W. Ford says:

Note to self: read prior comments before posting (hangs head in shame). RL and Day Job tend to not like being ignored.

  20. Nate says:

    No worries, AW.

I DO owe a “main post” update. The semester ended (except for grading) a few minutes ago, so I’ll get on that horse and ride in a day or so

  21. Tor Erling says:

Good to hear that you are alive and good Nate :) I am listening to south coast now, it was a bit harder to get into for me than the others, but I’ve figured that I really like it too :)
Yeah, some times the real life comes and takes up some time and steam, so that there isn’t too much left for hobbies, but there will come a time you’ll get some time ;)

Just don’t stop the writing completely :) One that waits for something good… etc ;)

keep up doing a good work and when you get some spare time and juice write ;) hehe :D

  22. Nathan, Glad to hear that there’s some good stuff going on with the day job. – That is so cool! Sorta envious. :) I was wondering what was happening in your world. – And as you can see, it took me a little time to come back and comment. :o Take care, and I hope that you have some good times this Holiday season.

  23. Gail says:

Nate, the things you have been up to are easily as interesting as a novel! I am seriously impressed. No need to sweat the writing, the year you wrote four novels was not as busy as this past year, right? So we fans will be glad to see whatever you write whenever you write it!
Meanwhile your voice has been popping up in surprising places. (It’s always good to hear from you, even if you are playing a bad guy!)

  24. RonnieStandridge says:

    Nate
I simply LOVE your books and your style of reading them. I to am very glad that all is well with you and that you are so busy. Your day job sounds like quite a hoot, I too am jealous of your day job. I am just a househusband, taking care of our home of 6 people. I wish sometimes that I could get everyone here to do their jobs like they do in your books. It seems a little more like double share around here. Hope you get done with Cape Grace soon! I have been done listening to your books, twice, for a little while now and heard most of the other books on podiobooks.com and I am just starting to go stir crazy.

    GREAT BOOKS!! Awesome Universe.

    Ronnie

  25. Jordan C. D. (XdbX on forums) says:

    Hey all it’s Jordan.
I would like to know what the plot to this book is some what. (not going to happen most likely.)
So what podcast have you been in lately that makes Gail say and i quote
“It’s always good to hear from you even if you are playing a bad guy!”

  26. Nate says:

Cape Grace is the story of how Sarah Krugg is forced to leave home and join the crew of the Lois.

I *think* she’s talking about Murder at Avedon Hill.

  27. Jordan C. D. (XdbX on forums) says:

Wow you are in Murder at Avedon hill?
    I don’t remember you in it… wait…
    were you the moon beast?

  28. Jordan C. D. (XdbX on forums) says:

sorry for posting 2 times in a row back to back but i want to thank you for giving us some what of the plot to your next book/podcast.

    I can’t wait now. :)

  29. Chazlo Portello says:

With all the podcast material that is available in the world, and the half dozen still unopened audio books on my iPod, I find myself listening to Quarter Share for a second run. I never listen to podcasts twice. There is so much material available that I get to feeling like I have to listen to it all. But here I am, back on the Lois, listening to Ish set up his first trading booth again. Thank you Nate for creating something worth coming back to. It looks like Sigler isn’t the only one with junkies.

I toyed with the idea of whining about there not being any new Nathan Lowell novels. I though I might be the first to whine in O-nine. But it looks like I am a little late for that.

Congrats on the career projects. It sounds like interesting work. Cheers, and thanks again.

  30. Nate says:

Thanks Chaz .. Believe me, nobody wants me to get a new book out more than *I* do.

    I’m glad you’re enjoying it.

  31. Scott N. says:

“I find myself listening to Quarter Share for a second run.”

I’m on pass number three for all the “Shares”. Nate has spoiled many of us – it’s hard to listen to most other pod novels. Is it the level of detail, the delivery, the “Ish-isims” or the tech being described as commonplace and routine so that the nuances of the story are more prevalent? Who knows…

Can we all come over and do some yard work for you while you write Nate? And next time, spool it out a week per episode. You know us diehards will Hoover it up in a weekend – we have no self control !

  32. Nate says:

I’d take you up on that offer on the yardwork, Scott, but unfortunately it’s my Day Job(s) that take the time.

    I haven’t forgotten, but we’re havin’ a bit of a crush here.

    Episode a week, huh?

  33. Hance says:

Nate, I know your day job is important and I hope you find time to finish your next book soon.

I have listened to all of your books at least 4 times and I need my next fix…(great, now Sigler is going to hunt me down for being addicted to a different author.)

When work is hectic, the kids are going crazy, and the dark, cold, claws of winter are scratching at the door, you offer a way for me to escape. I am eternally grateful for your hard work.

  34. kbeartx says:

Am I looking in the wrong place for news of Nathan’s progress [or lack thereof] on the Next Novel? Nothing posted here for five months?

FYI, FWIW, and BTW, IMO Nathan Lowell is very possibly the Absolute Best Podcast Fiction Novelist among all current authors. His writing is richly detailed and deeply engaging, his reading is clear, expressive, and easy to understand, and his audio production is pristine and eminently listenable.

Having ploughed through many, many other podcast fiction works, I have recently returned to South Coast to revisit Nathan’s Universe, and it is SO REFRESHING TO CLEARLY HEAR WELL-WRITTEN PROSE WELL RECORDED [if you’ve listened to lots of other podcasts as I have, you know this is all-to-frequently NOT the case. Nate does it ALL VERY WELL!

  35. Nate says:

Yea, you’re looking in a single post. Try hitting the banner at the top. I made a post in May :)

  36. Kathy says:

I am looking for Cape Grace. Has it been published or is it out on podcast? I don’t see the status.

  37. Nate says:

Cape Grace is the next book on my docket. As soon as I get Owner’s Share done, Cape Grace will be the next one I do.

Sorry for the delay there, but priorities keep being juggled.

  38. Dave says:

Nate- I just wanted to say from the bottom of my heart THANK YOU! The traders tales have been a fabulous listen. Finishing off Owner’s Share must have been a challenge. How many different endings did you consider before you put this one down? I don’t want to be a spoiler for anyone who hasn’t heard it yet. But you did great with it, and I appreciate all the time and effort you put into it for us all. On a lighter note….you like to eat don’t you. You have a way of making me hungry every time you describe meals and food. for some reason it’s like listen to a chapter and I’m hungry. And because of you, I went out and bought a coffee grinder and buy my coffee bye the bean now. I must say I didn’t really know coffee until I started experimenting with different kinds of beans, Thank you for that. Hope you are happy and healthy. Thank you to you and all who helped you with your wonderful work.
