When Captain Bjorn Gunderson docks with what he thinks is routine cargo, he embarks on a very different voyage. On a milk run from Welliver to Breakall, a tiny rock punctures his ship, The Wanderer, and leaves the crew adrift twenty-thousand years from home. With food, water, and air running out, a desperate crewman takes a reckless gamble, risking his life in a daring bid to find safety. What he finds instead puts them all at risk.
Join Captain Gunderson and his crew on the final voyage of the Solar Clipper Wanderer in book one of Tales from the Deep Dark — A Light in the Dark.
A Light In the Dark is the first of a series of novellas set in the Golden Age of the Solar Clipper. The series focuses on the happenings in and around a renegade outpost, a place outside the jurisdiction of the Confederated Planets–a place where the normal rules don’t apply and where anything might happen.
An award winning producer of science fiction and fantasy podcasts, Nathan Lowell has produced eight novels totaling over 160 episodes and 70 hours of podcast fiction. Since 2008, four of his productions have been finalists in the Parsec Awards and his book–Captain’s Share–won the 2010 Parsec Award for Best Podcast Fiction (Long Form). In 2010, Ridan Publishing began producing his work in paper and ebook formats. Those books are available online from Amazon, Barnes and Noble, the iBook Store, and from Ridan Publishing.
Novel Nibbles are a series of shorter works offered in ebook only format for those who would like something to read on their phones and other small screen mobile devices. Coming in at around 20,000 words, they’re shorter works for smaller screens. See http://novelnibbles.com for more information and other titles in the Novel Nibbles family.
You can find this book on Kindle, Nook, and Smashwords.
You can also order an open epub copy direct from the author.

Sounds like another winner, any chance of seeing it in audio in the near future?
I just don’t have time to set down and read anymore, but I listen to audio at work.
Thanks again for all the good tales.
yes. I’m narrating it now for broadcast on the Hugo Award winning Star Ship Sofa.
Just got it on Amazon – looking forward to reading it this weekend!
J.
Just ordered. I have 4 days of flying to look forward two over the next week for work. This book is going to make the flights 1,000,000 times better. I love your work and was excited to see a new book, and only $0.99 too
; beats a cup of java any day. And I still love your work even after Article 37 in Owner’s share. Well thank you Nate for such a wonderful universe and killer stories. By the way, I will be picking this up when the audio is released.
I picked up A Light in the Dark on my Nook. I really loved this short story. Your little bytes are as good as the longer ones. More, more, more. Thanks for a nice quick read. Diana
Thanks, Diana.
I need to move a lot more words around this next year!
At least a tasty canape while waiting for the lonnnnngg overdue double share. You write so damn well, its a pity we can not get to read what you write due to publishing issues. Not your fault, but still a pity.
Did this run on StarShipSofa yet? Did I miss it?
No, I haven’t recorded it yet. Tony keeps pestering me to get it done so I suppose I should do that.
Yay! More Solar Clipper Tails. I just bought this on Amazon. I’ve been listening to the Trader Tales stories over and over and over the last few month. I can’t wait for the new Ishmael adventures this year. Thanks for all your hard work.
Can’t wait to see this appear on podiobooks, hopefully it will help tide me over until more Ishmael adventures
@Richard: This is too short for podiobooks, but Tony C. Smith at StarShipSofa has accepted it. I’ll be recording this week.
Any news when this will appear on StarShipSofa?
I haven’t finished recording it yet, so it’ll be a while yet.
I read it a few days ago. I read lots of your reviews. Nate, you have a very loyal following. I hope found outpost is the first in a long line of shorts. We want to know more about this world and beg you to tell us more. Tingly have considered it, many of us are wondering what happens to Pip, Bev, Brillo, and the rest. Your work is well appreciated and even if you decide to tell us other aspects of the universe, we will want to know. Thank you for everything and most importantly reminding us to appreciate good coffee.
Hi, I Love the Trader Tales audio books, I have just finished listening to all 6 in a row, and WOW, im in withdraw!!
is there any place to get this one in an audio format? i need more from you!!!
Not yet, Adam.
I’m supposed to read it for Tony C. Smith’s StarShipSofa but haven’t done it yet.
Is there a link or url available to the page on Star Ship Sofa containing this story audio?
Is there any update on when this will be on Star Ship Sofa?
I need to get it recorded first and it’s too long for just one episode. At 20,000 words, it’ll take at least 2 hours.
Is there a reason you don’t offer your books on Google Play?
Yes.
Google Play is an app store. Google play has the Kindle app, the B&N app, the Kobo app… probably the sony reader app and at least three others.
My books are available on Kindle, Nook, Kobo, and smashwords.
Creating an app for each title seems superfluous and largely pointless to the exercise.
Google Play also sells books for the Google Play Books app. You wouldn’t have to create an app for each book, at least that is my understanding I could be wrong. I was asking because I don’t like using multiple eReader apps and all of my book purchases have so far been through Google’s Play Book app.
Thank you for the quick reply. I really enjoy your work.
Thanks for the heads up.
This looks like an extention of the google ebooks initiative from 2010.
At the moment that program is not one I will enroll in because of the pricing (they recommend 80% of the paper price), and they also require Adobe DRM Server. That’s a problem. Not only am I opposed to DRM on principle, this DRM product from Adobe is so expensive, the company won’t tell you until you order it. Backchannels indicate it’s $6500 to set up and $1500 annual subscription.
Yeah. Not happening.

Last paragraph on the page:
“Some books on Google Play are completely free of digital rights management – they are either free public domain books, or the rightsholder has chosen to provide its readers full access to the content. In these cases you will be able to download DRM-free epubs or PDFs.”
Once again thanks for the great books.
Interesting that they don’t give that as one of the options when signing up. It asked me to register my server license number.
Nathan, thanks for keeping things DRM free!
I was looking to buy your books off of the Google Play Books store and couldn’t find them. That’s when I bumped into this reply.
When you’re signing up, are you going through the Google Books Partner Program? https://books.google.com/partner/signon
If so, and it’s still giving you trouble, I’ll see if I can send some Google folks your way.
I’m probably not going to pursue Google Play at the moment. Ridan is handling the Share books and it’s just not worth it for the 3 sales a month* I’d get from Google play right now.
(highly speculative, I know)
