Federated Freight

federate_freight_newSome time ago I got a Galaxy Note II and I love it. One of the very first things I did was make a “ship’s tablet” background for it. One of my Tweeps as a new phone and reminded me that I never gave this thing out so … here ya go.

Happy Hollandaise!

ETA: I had some requests for larger formats and different aspects.

federated_freight_laptop_skinHere’s a really large landscape version ( 2940×1934 ).

federate_freight_largeHere’s a larger landscape version ( 1600×1280 )without the variations in color banding.

Sweet! Any chance of a DST, or Icarus wallpaper? For those times when you’re not in a writing mood, but still a creative mood, maybe – perhaps even some of the other lines? Some of the other lines do sound interesting!

  2. Mike G. says:

    Haha, that’s great. Thanks!

Yes, my Note 3 would be about right as a ship’s tablet.

  3. Sean says:

Sadly, the resolution and proportions are off for my iPad mini. But cool, all the same!

  4. The Captain says:

what size/resolution do you need? I have the original layers … shouldn’t take but a minute

Love this too, but I’m getting some minor pixilation on my Galaxy Tab 3 which is 1280×800 resolution. I’m not sure if this is just because of the editor that has to be used to “crop” the image for use as a wallpaper or the image resolution. The funkie bit is that it black boarders the cropped image in landscape orientation because it doesn’t think the original image is wide enough. Sooooooo, if you had a landscape version that would be so cool.

I posted a couple of larger format landscape versions.

Feel free to clip out the size you need and resize it so it works on your device. :)

  7. The Captain says:

And yeah. I’ll work on those others. I should have thought of that before. :)

  8. Sean says:

Awesome! Thank you – the large high resolution version works beautifully! Now to pick a rating…

  9. Myranda_lynn says:

    Cool beans, and thanks!

  10. Gabriel says:

Thanks Sar. A great Xmas present from you to us.

I converted it to 2048 x 2048 and it looks awesome on my iPad Retina Mini.

  12. Tom Muye says:

AWESOME !! Looks great on my Galaxy Note 10.1 !!! It sure confused the Wife tho !! Guess I should have told her. Thanks !!!!

  13. It should work well on my Nexus 7 also.

Hearkening back to an earlier conversation: I finally realized that looking for a smartphone to emulate a ship’s tablet missed one important point, making the whole thing a comparison of apples to apricots: No one needs to make a voice call on a ship’s tablet. Written messages are wholly adequate. If something is to be gained by a conversation, no CPJCT-engaged ship is so large that you can’t simply go and talk to the person.

Now, I just need to figure out the dimensions of a ship’s tablet and holster that won’t make a walking crewman look like he’s swinging a clipboard from his hindquarters….

I’ve got a Nexus 7, and it’s just about perfect, though a Nexus 6 (if they made such) would be better. A holographic display helps in that respect, of course. However, our devices already have front and back cameras, and microphone and speakers, so voice calling is really not that big a deal, especially in a LAN-like situation such as ShipNet. And while most of what we see are quick text notes sent back and forth on the ship, I can easily see situations where voice would be good (maybe a PIP arrangement for a video call, but that perceptual space would probably be better used for more technical details on the systems you’re trying to fix!)

  15. Zed says:

What are you using to make these? It seems very pixelated, particularly the circle. The back-to-back “F” also seems blurry. If this is in Photoshop PSD format, please send and I will add shadow, anti-aliasing, and a few other touch-ups.

  16. The Captain says:

It’s gimp. It’s not worth messing with, Zed. It was something sitting on my harddrive that I thought a few folks would like.

I need to update the logo anyway … FF is not the same company any more :)

  17. Kanein Encanto says:

I know I’m joining a bit late, but I should have some fun with these as I have a Note II myself. (Can’t wait to pick up a Note III actually)

But, Michael Spence, if memory serves me correctly, while nobody was placing full conversation calls with their tablet, some of the messages were sent by voice rather than text… So large format smartphones like the Note II are probably pretty close to ship’s tablets, just different software… well and Nathan says that they ‘open their tablet’ at times which does have me thinking they’re some sort of clamshelled smartphones… but with the developments in LED technologies, we might have those coming out in the next few years, flexible LED screens are already very much in development. A future version of an iPhone or Android device may yet fold in half to take up less space in a pocket, while protecting the screen from scratches.

Woohoo! Just checked at Amazon and found that Owner’s share is out on Kindle. I just ordered it.

  19. Jonathan Bailey says:

Sorry, Owner’s Share. Too excited to hit the shift key, I guess.

  20. Glen Romero says:

Any chance of ship images in the future?

  21. The Captain says:

    Anything is possible :)

  22. Robert says:

I am so using this wallpaper on my tablet.

  23. Clean these up a bit, and you could sell coffee mugs (see what I did there? 😉 ) and t-shirts. Online companies like Cafepress makes it really easy.
