Happy Holidays

On Tuesday, Evo Terra contacted me about a scheduling mix up with Podiobooks releases and offered the opportunity to give all of my fans a bit of an early Christmas present. I’ve been recording like mad and teasing everybody with how many episodes I’ve gotten done ever since.

The title went live last night with five episodes, almost three hours worth of holiday cheer. It’ll be up on iTunes as soon as the feed clears Apple approval. I’ll get it added to my master feed as soon as I remember how to do it.

I wish you all a happy holiday season and safe and prosperous new year.

Just heard Ep 13, Mr. Lowell you are an evil, evil man. More please.

  2. Mary T. says:

    Enjoying the ride…

  3. Nate says:

@stefan – thanks Stefan. Your support is greatly appreciated. An episode *should* release tonight .. I hope. But then Evo is traveling and we won’t get any more before Monday.

  4. Norman728 says:

WOW Really, Not that I am surprised since it’s something that has been scratching at our collective minds since the beginning.

  5. G says:

    MORE PLEASE !!!

  6. Memline says:

To Michael, They have been “encouraged” to get out of there before the acting CEO gets there. There is more than meets the eye going on behind the scenes. A mystery is afoot. Once the papers were signed, there was nothing he could do about it, but they are afraid of something. Hmmmmm. Safety for Miss Maitland? Worry about the company? What? Fortunately, we have 17 more episodes or so to get answers and I trust Nate to not bore us to death with watches. However, they need to get to some interactions between all these folks.

  7. Jon says:

I suspect that Ames wants the company to be public and with him at the undisputed helm, while Ms. Kingsly, wants the daughter to succeed under Ishmael and successfully lead the company at the end of her year-long “internship”. This is why I think Ms. Kingsly wants the ship off the books and Ish out the door, because she fears Ames will try to squash / hamper Miss Mallony’s attempts to successfully complete the will’s requirements. Thus I think that once the Iris is running cargo, Ish is going to come up against doors that have been closed by Ames’ backroom pressuring of those with whom Ish wants to do business. It also seems possible to me that Ames will try to pour fuel on the fires he starts by tipping off future TMZ-like character “Mr. Allen” with misinformation and suggested scandal. I think it seems fairly implied that “Mr. Allen” is someone who will be a gad fly to Ish, looking to take the insufferable arrogant captain/new CEO down a peg or 12.

I may be right or wrong with this speculation, but one thing is for sure, I know I won’t be disappointed by how or where the story goes, for Mr. Lowell has always charted a true and profitable course. And as we all were proverbially informed from the beginning, it’s all about “enjoying the ride.”

  8. Michael McCarthy says:

@Nate: I’ve seen several comments about character’s names and their spelling and I know how much it bugs me when i get a name wrong. So how about a new section on the web site for the crew listing for the Iris? Or just a list of characters in the story so far you could post here? Like at the beginning of a play by Shakespeare.

I don’t want to take away from your recording production, so maybe as a break between sessions or if it gets too loud? Please? Oh, and congrats on the iTunes ranking. Are Sigler and Hutchins irked?

  9. Michael McCarthy says:

Oops, forgot. Is anyone else seeing trouble with the Podiobooks web site? It seems to be having a lot more downtime than I’ve seen before.

  10. Nate says:

There’s a lot of problems right now at Libsyn where the files get served from. It’s been going on for a couple of days and they’re working on it.

Podiobooks has periods of instability that should be resolved when we go to Podiobooks 2.0 later this year (I hope).

As for names, Arellone is already in the Agammemnon’s roster, isn’t she?

And no, I’m not going to post the roster for the Jezebel/Iris until the podcast is over. When we get there, you’ll see why.

    For NOW we have:

    Ishmael Horatio Wang
    Montgomery Bailey
    Christine Maloney
    Stacy Arellone

Alys Giggone’s name is spelled out under the Lois’s roster as is everybody else up to this point. There might be a few new names added.

  11. Michael McCarthy says:

@Nate: Thanks. Nothing there on Agamemnon, I think Stacy Arellone was too late an addition to make it to the official roster.

So the Chief’s last name is Bailey and Kirsten’s last name is Kingsley. Not that it matters one bit, but what’s the geneology? Maternal granfather? Paternal grandfather and she’s a married Kingley nee Bailey?

Also, the William Tinker had nicknames that were mentioned once or twice–both bad and good. Did the Agamemnon have one?

  12. GaryS. says:

    Iris – Ish’s mother’s name?

  13. Michael S. says:

    SPOILER ALERT!
Oh oh! Is Frank going to join Ish’s crew as the new cook?

  14. Norman728 says:

episode 14 was interesting to say the least.

  15. Mike says:

Nate…It must make you smile to see your name on 6 of the top ten Itunes Podcasts, with Owners Share being of course, number 1. Those books have certainly made us smile, over and over again.

I am sure someone could provide Ish with a 30 day or so bridge loan for the 8.6 Mil note he took, as he has more than that coming from the salvage. It might cost a little, but it is sure money! But of course, it probably won’t be needed,…trust Iris

  16. Nate says:

What makes me smile more are the Ratings – with so many in the Highest Rated and Most Rated, it’s hugely gratifying that people have taken the time to log in, subscribe, and then rate the podcasts. That’s *huge* and it makes me smile every time.

  17. JaneAtPlay says:

Nate, you’re no slouch yourself, loading freight on a few words – “Why didn’t you tell me, when your mother died.” Heartwrenching – and well done. Thanks for the new ep.

  18. Nate says:

    Thanks, Jane.

I’m trying to get 15 mixed now, but … these people .. what you call ’em? The ones that live with you?

    Family! Yeah. that’s them.

    Sheesh.

    :)

  19. Michael McCarthy says:

Sounds like you need to build a recording studio in a workshop or shed in the backyard where you can’t be easily bothered. Can you buy egg crate soundproofing material through Amazon? You could put it on a public wish list and we could all buy you a piece and have it delivered.

Remind your family what’s important in life and why you write–us, the fans! They should have a little more consideration for our addictions. Sheesh! ;-)

  20. Nate says:

i just built a booth in the basement – but laundry, dishwashers, shrieking children .. all make enough noise to break thru my minor foam and book barriers.

I think I’ll just do my best to work around the noise for now. It’s a self preservation thing :)

  21. Memline says:

Just wondering, but did Ish get shipsuits for himself and Gramps? It sounded like he ordered for the ladies, but not the guys. Did I miss something or was it just assumed?

I was amused at the can opener. Been there, done that. Had my poor son running all over Great Falls one night (gave him the wrong motel name) just to bring me a corkscrew. My friend and I had this great bottle of wine ——-well, he found us, finally. The 3 of us enjoyed the bottle of wine. I could see the 4 of them trying to get the cans open———-Sure am glad Miss A. thought of one before they were in the deep dark. LOL

  22. Nate says:

The officers have to buy their own. They didn’t get matching ones altho they probably should have. It’s one of those differences that rank carries.

  23. Michael McCarthy says:

While cooking lunch and listening via a bluetooth headset, I hit the wrong button and ended up at episode 1. (If you haven’t gone back and listened to it, I suggest you do.) At the beginning there was a lot of dialogue about Mr. Maloney having a heart attack and dying and how that was nearly impossible these days.

With all the plot developments and events, I wonder if this was just talk amongst shipmates–Ish and his helmsman–or is it something more significant? Specifically, I wonder if this is a red herring meant to distract us to sinister possibilities, or foreshadowing of something else?

Is Mr. Maloney going to show up in the last act alive and well and has just been putting his daughter and royal court (aka board of directors) through a test of character and loyalty like something out of Shakespeare? (Did Shakespeare ever do that in one of his plays? I can’t seem to recall.) A classic plot device except that that may be too easy for Nate to use. Although…a classic is a classic for a reason.

Isn’t it noteworthy that we haven’t had an appearance of Mr. Maloney’s bodyguard, Kurt? Where’s the Tai Chi lesson that has become an in-port tradition between Ish and Kurt since that first fast packet ride out from the academy? (I just made that last bit up, obviously.) He’s STILL guarding the STILL alive Mr. Maloney, of course!

Yea or nay? Is Jeff Maloney still alive and hiding out until the last scene?

  24. Michael McCarthy says:

    Eps 16 is up!

  25. Bill says:

As of right now it seems that Itunes has a bad feed to the files. It will not download or play any of the files.

  26. Nate says:

That’s likely a Libsyn issue. They’ve been having trouble the last few days. I’m not sure why, but give it a bit and it should clear up.

  27. Bill says:

Ok thanks i just wanted you to know so that you would be able to do something or notify the right people.

  28. BookerJ says:

Man have i got a bad feeling about where this is going. Almost the same bad feeling I had in captain’s share :( I hate having to stop reading a series all together /sigh. On a side note – Man you do know how to write a character I want to punch very well. on another side note…I really wish I had come across this when i was completely published….you don’t write things I like to wait a day or a week to find out. “The daily refresh” I’ve come to hate now. *wave* bring on the agony.

  29. Nate says:

@bookerJ — just wait. the one you want to punch may change :D and i’m trying to get enough ahead that I can put out two a day.

  30. BookerJ says:

lol. thanks for the heads up. A machine putting out 20 a day would help this jones man. *scratch arm* *twitch*

  31. Michael McCarthy says:

    …tick, tick, tick……tick, tick, tick……tick, tick, tick……tick, tick, tick…

(Does this make me seem impatient and ungrateful, or just impatient?)

  32. Michael McCarthy says:

Doh! There is supposed to a “refresh” between each group of “ticks” but the system thinks it’s code.

  33. Jerry says:

I wonder about paying for things. If “Miss Maitland” needs to pay for something and “thumbs” the payment will her cover be blown? Or is there a legal alias in place so the payment shows up as Maitland rather than Maloney? Or maybe the person collecting the payment doesn’t get told whose thumb it is?

  34. Nate says:

    Interesting question, Jerry.

  35. Jerry says:

I noticed that she hasn’t paid for anything yet, at least not so far as the story states.

  36. Clem says:

I was reading on nathanlowell.org: “I wanted to know what that famous red-shirted crewman did before he got sent on the Away Team and killed”. I wonder if Ish will have that away mission in the next 12 episodes…

  37. david says:

@Jerry I wondered the same thing – if Ish has been thumbing the check for 15 years at Frank’s, how come “nobody” noticed?

  38. Hade says:

@Clem: I don’t think Ish’s death will be part of the story, no matter when, how and why it happens. The books are written like diaries. Ever heard of someone describing his own death in a diary?

  39. Mike says:

Skipper…shouldn’t they be going to Twelve Volt, rather than Ten Volt….we might have to change the Diurnia Sector chart

  40. Michael McCarthy says:

“Skipper…shouldn’t they be going to Twelve Volt, rather than Ten Volt….we might have to change the Diurnia Sector chart”

As well as all the electrical specs.

  41. Nate says:

There’s a comment about that on the Diurnia Sector already. I’m gonna change I’ve changed the chart.

  42. Brainswarm says:

    Hade:
If you’re reassuring yourself that I’m going to make it through this since I’m talking to you now, quit being such a smart-ass! Hell dude, you never seen “Sin City”? “Sunset Boulevard”? “American Beauty”?
    Quote from the movie Kick-Ass.

  43. Michael McCarthy says:

Podiobooks’ server seem to be hung up hard. I haven’t be able to get a web page loaded in almost two hours.

  44. Nate says:

They were doing server maintenance last night. Seems to be up this morning.

  45. jim bob says:

Podiobooks has been in and out all day for me. We are probally doing a DOS by refreshing every 2 min

  46. Scott says:

    Nate,
Any word on podiobooks.com I’m still not getting through.

  47. Gene says:

It seems to me that Nates rabid fans have crashed podiobooks once again.

  48. Nate says:

The maintenance that Podiobooks did last night (Saturday) seems to have caused another problem. They’re working on it as fast as they can.

  49. Brainswarm says:

Podiobooks was up about an hour ago. Long enough for me to grab ep 21. Now it’s back down again.

  50. Diana says:

I’m not worried about Gramps Bailey. Left Achilles ten years ago…Beached?…Has been Ms Maloney’s bodyguard for the last six years. He has a problem with his knees or hip and cannot bend, squat or set on his knees. He hasn’t been able to fix anything that required said abilities. But he hasn’t brought this up to the Captain or Ms Maloney…Maybe he fears being put out to pasture again. Gramps know or knows of Greta Gherheart. I think he will defer his job to her. Greta and Ishmael are made for each other and I hope that they get married and live happily ever after.

But lets hope the scrubbers don’t go south before it can get fixed. I think that Frank Wang may put up the credits on the 90 day loan and become a part of Icarus Transport. I had hoped that the purveyor of Franks finest would be Dad :=) . Sadness that they have lost 15 years to get to know one another again.

Sunday breakfasts with Mom were her way of keeping Frank in her/their memory. Would love to know how the romance got started and why she left? So I’m hoping that will come out as we get to know Frank.

MMMM a passenger freighter/liner. Nifty. Don’t know how this will make his fortune unless his ship starts doing corporate passages. But I will hang on and continue to enjoy the ride.
