Half Share: Update

The books are finally shipping from Amazon and you can put an order at Ridan for a paper back.

The limited edition hardcover will be available in a couple weeks or so — as soon as we get through the process queue.

Somebody thought I needed to tell you that there are now 10 episodes on the feed. I’m not sure I understand why you need a blog post to tell you that. It’s all over twitter. It’s on the comment thread. Oh, and they’re in the feed.

You *do* know you can subscribe to the books and the episodes get — you know — delivered to you, right? You can also subscribe to the posts here, on the podiobooker blog, and the comment streams of both? You *do* know that, right?

I’ve lost about four days now to holidays, car failures, and snow removal (the city has started enforcing snow removal laws – budgets are tight everywhere and it’s a moneymaker for them – yikes). Yesterday I put down two full episodes but ran out of editing time. I plan on getting at least ONE of them up in tonight’s updates. I’m hoping for both but … I’ll get one to you at least.

Ok, back to editing audio … demanding fans wanna know what comes next.

Hint: big debt.

Thanks for all the updates, Nate. We all love your work. Edit carefully ;)

  2. Nate says:

    Oh duh.

I *have* that link .. overlooked the order column … too many things half done in my head :D

  3. Anita says:

Thanks, Nate. I already got the ebook for myself, but will get that paper copy to the library. I’ve seen the first book taken out quite a bit there; so this one should see some action as well.

Meanwhile, I will wait for the completion of Owner’s Share before I start listening. :-)

  4. Joey Voss says:

Wow. I hope “Big Debt” is in reference to Ish’s purchase and not your personal situation. It could be read either way. Thank you, Nate. I know we are impatient and demanding, but it is so inspiring how you have touched so many lives. I’ll have my next book orders in soon, and continue to listen to 1-10.

  5. Lisa says:

    Nate:
Thanks for thinking of us with everything going on with you!

Funny story: I don’t usually go out for breakfast, but my sister took me this week. When the waitress asked how I wanted my eggs, I said “over easy” without thinking (I had just listened to Owner’s Share before going to bed and it was obviously on my mind). It was only after the waitress left that I realized that I had never had “over easy” eggs before and hoped they would be good. They were, but the coffee not so much.

Now, if I can only find a place that has Spicy Beefalo Casserole and Granapple crumble!

QUOTE: “You *do* know you can subscribe to the books and the episodes get — you know — delivered to you, right? You can also subscribe to the posts here, on the podiobooker blog, and the comment streams of both? You *do* know that, right?” /QUOTE

    We *do*.

Infact, some of us have all the posts and comments on SolarClipper.com and the comments from the podiobooks blog entry going to our feed readers, email alerts for new posts on the fan forums setup, follow you on twitter, AND, of course, have the new episode feed in our pod-catcher. (did I miss anything?)

But what if our feed reader or pod catcher isn’t working right? Or what if it’s slow to update? If it takes 35 minutes in between the new episode going live and my pod catcher updating? I could have listened to the whole new episode in that time! Or accidentally read a comment with a spoiler!

  7. I have subscribed to the feed… but I’m not that patient. I just keep refreshing the page waiting for number 11 to post.

  8. F Riley says:

I was looking at the way profits were divided in the handbook, and I have to wonder how the owner’s make any money. They get 20 percent of profits, in the example that was 2000 cr. Out of this 2000 cr. The owner then has to pay saleries, buy foodstuffs, replace inventories, make ship repairs. I don’t see how there is even enough out of the profit to pay ships crew. How is Ish going to make a profit, let alone pay off the ship in 5 years?

  9. F Riley says:

Maybe profits are determined after ship expenses, and things like salary, taxes, repairs, foor come out before profit is determined?

  10. norman728 says:

BIG DEBT!!!!! Whoa does that mean Ish is Stiffed on the Payout? or does it mean he should of gotten a lawyer to look at his agreement? Or is it something else?

  11. Watcher says:

Profit = Revenue minus expenses. I suspect that running a shipping company in the future is rather like running most other businesses today – the vast majority don’t survive five years. Most of the rest stumble along with zero profit (ie, revenus = expenses), and a very small number figure out a great niche that allows them to do really, really well. You’ll note that this was the advice that Ish received – figure out what you can do that nobody else in the quadrant is doing.

  12. Jamey says:

    1) I can get it delivered to me? Via e-mail attachment, perhaps? I’m really not up on these new computer technologies like RSS feeds and twitters and utines…

  13. Nate says:

Itunes Music Store will send it to you.

You really owe it to yourself to take 10 or 15 minutes and get up to speed on some of those things.

You’re missing out on a lot.

    Just sayin’

  14. Michael says:

I hate you. I was about to go to bed……

    :D

  15. Mike says:

Thanks Nate – I see 2 more episodes (11 & 12) are available (and am downloading now). I feel like an addict waiting for a fix; that is followed by such pleasure of hearing each chapter.

  16. Shannon Farrell says:

Keep up the great work, Nate! I can’t wait for a hardback copy!

  17. Jamey says:

@Nate – Dunno why someone had to re-invent perfectly good things like e-mail and IRC. Seriously – IM services? That’s finger, combined with short e-mails. Twitter might as well be length-limited IRC or an e-mail mailing list. I’m just sayin’…

In fact, I heard the most horrific thing the other day… I keep seeing this TL;DR running around the ‘Net. I finally asked what it was.

“Too Long; Didn’t Read”????? Now, doesn’t *THAT* scare the hull off your ship?

  18. Geoff says:

just listened to episodes 11 & 12. I’m loving this book. Great work as usual Nate.

  19. Anonymous Steward says:

    Qeng!

  20. …but I have to hit refresh on the podiobooks site every 10-15 mins or so … want to get the latest eps as soon as possible … *help me* ;)

  21. F Riley says:

Will Owner’s Share be the last, or will there be a Coorperate share and Family Share?

  22. Nate says:

Owner’s Share is the last Share.

    There will be more books.

  23. Michael says:

    There will? Nice.

I honestly thought it was the last.

  24. DanD says:

Like a spanner to the cranium. More Ish! There is hope in life again. Thanks again.

  25. Nate says:

No, I intend to keep writing in the Golden Age Universe.

I have at least one book – Cape Grace – that will link South Coast to Half Share.

There are several new directions I want to take.

And there may be a door or two left open in Ishmael Wang’s story at the end of Owner’s Share. Never know. ;)

  26. John M says:

Nate, any idea how Ridan will deliver the epub version? I ordered it with the paperback and didn’t see any download options.

  27. Michael says:

    Nate,

That’s great. I am honestly interested in seeing what other directions you take. Personally I would love to see a three book series or something with Pip’s family.

  28. Nate says:

    @michael – i get that a lot

@john – i have no idea – i thought you had to get epub from smashwords. Check your email for a link?

  29. Mark says:

I absolutely LOVE this series. I just finished listening to episode 12 and got a little depressed since I wanted to keep listening so badly. Your writing is simply amazing and I look forward to reading more. Any chance you are going to write something after Owner’s Share, say Corporate Share where Ish starts to own the entire quadrant?

  30. @John… If your order through Ridan they will send it by email. That’s how I got mine :-)

  31. John M says:

@Michael…. Thanks, hopefully they send it before the weekend.

  32. Nate says:

@mark – there will be more. It won’t be “Share”

@ross and others who know the back door to Libsyn – I heard from Evo and if you break into Libsyn bunker before the episode gets released there are sometimes problems with the file locks and it’s a PITA to clear the error. Please wait for the file to show up on the feed or I’m going to have to hold them until Evo is ready to review them. Thanks for your patience.

Note: NO FILES WILL BE UPLOADED BEFORE MONDAY. Evo’s not going to be available to do releases because he’s traveling.

  33. Holly says:

Hey Nathan – for what it is worth – episodes 1-9 and 11 download easily from both Podiobooks and iTunes. 10 & 12 are both giving me “you don’t have permission to download this” errors. You didn’t happen to set a country exclusion did you? I can’t be the only fan deployed out here in the wilds of Afghanistan!

  34. Nate says:

@holly – it’s a libsyn error and *should* clear up by itself soon. They’ve been having spotty outages here all day, too.

    @duncan – you’re welcome.

  35. Matt says:

Hey Nate – Can you tell us the total number of episodes there will be for Owner’s Share? I recall a comment you made about it being a fairly long tale, but not sure how that’s going to translate into episodes.

    Keep up the great work!

  36. Nate says:

there will be 30 episodes in all.

  37. James says:

SPOILER ALERT- Just finished episode 13 nice touch with Frank am waiting to find out what happens next thanks.

  38. Jonathan says:

Continuing a little on James SPOILER (no worries, I’d listened first lol) I can’t help but wonder Nate… did you have that in mind for Frank from the first time we went into over easy, or was that just a little serendipity? I actually caught a little chill on that revealation… no more listening while drivin’ for me. lol

  39. Brainswarm says:

I’d been expecting this development with Frank, mostly due to this:

  40. Stead says:

Firstly thank you so much for many hours of quality entertainment Nate I have listened to all of the books several times and have the kindle versions that have been released.

I would like to see the return of Pip, perhaps in owners share or perhaps that is a direction you could take for a new book…

    Again many thanks!

    MrStead

  41. Chris R says:

    Nate,

Any latest news on the hardcover for Half Share would like to make sure I dont miss out in adding it to the empty sace next to Quarter Share..

Regards from a devoted fan in the UK

  42. Nate says:

Rumor is that we’re *still* wrestling with a recalcitrant galley proof. I’ll post when I know. You won’t be left out because I’m pretty sure there are plenty left.
