Double Share Complete

Yes. Faithful Fans.

The book is complete. It needs some polish, probably a little fiddling. I’m sure I’ve crossed up a plot line or two, but it’s complete.

Last Friday the book was 78k. By Monday it was 96k. I threw away 15k words because the flow was wrong and then rearranged the rest. What that means is that I’ve written something around 25,000 words in the last three days.

I need to find the music before I can begin audio production so if you have any fav’s that you think might work, leave me a comment with the link and I’ll check it out.

Right now, I’m exhausted.

Congratulations! Can’t wait to listen to it. I really enjoy the happy fiction you write.

  2. lemetsky says:

Woohoo, and congratulations Nate – aææ eager here to get my hands on your next story :P

  3. Great to here it’s finished. You sure can churn out the words :)

I suppose if you wanted to continue with music of the same style as used previously you could go for more James Curren…

    Such as Computer Virus (http://www.archive.org/details/jamescurrancomputer)

I’m very very fond of Junko’s Tune (http://www.archive.org/details/jamescurranjunkostune) but it’s a little different to what you’ve been using so far. Might make a nice change though…

  4. DMR says:

Well done that was some writing weekend!

As much as I am desperate to get the next installment please take your time and get it right. I have loved all the previous ones and maybe they were also written and published as quickly but we can wait a little while longer to make sure you are as happy with it as possible….

  5. HasseMan says:

    Yay Nathan!

I can only agree with DMR. Take your time.

  6. Nate says:

This is “slow” for me. Quarter Share was written in 10 days. I actually started this version of Double Share in February but only had 8k words of it at the beginning of June. I threw out 5k of those. So this month I’ve written something like 120-130k words just on this book (I threw out a bunch that wasn’t working after I wrote it).

I’m sitting on – what is basically – a third draft. I’m nearly ready to start reading and I’m possibly more excited that you guys :)

  7. More excited than us? Well that is the author’s prerogative :)

Still… I’m pretty darn excited myself!

  8. Xenko says:

Can’t wait to hear it. I zipped through Quarter/Half/Full share in about 3 days. I don’t know what you’re doing, but keep it up!

  9. Chris says:

Sorry, no music recommendation. I just wanted to yell with pleasure at the good news, and I thought you might like to hear the noise … HOOOOORAAAAHHHH!

  10. Diane says:

On the music… do you want something similar to what has been used for the other “share” books. Something nautical sounding… or are we moving to a different area in Ish’s life and need something… different?

  11. Nate says:

that’s the question .. I’m still writing “sea stories” but I’m not averse to going more modern .. even electronic

  12. Diane says:

What I was looking at wasn’t so much modern… but the blues… some really nice stuff there on the internet archive, quick beginning hook, able to keep it short… nice sounds.

But then.. I love the sound of good blues music.

  13. Diane says:

You know… if I could get a copy of the 3rd draft… I could judge the music better *wink wink* :P

  14. Nate says:

well, if you COULD get a copy of the draft … but post some links here or email them to me :)

  15. Diane says:

I love the James Curran that Stephen suggested, or
    http://www.archive.org/details/TooLong
and this one just appeals http://www.archive.org/details/LeMule-SecondSong_323
    or this one http://www.archive.org/details/AcousticBlues

I am just browsing around, looking for something I can listen to over and over without smashing something, but still seems to fit the tone of the book.

Wow… the internet archive is just too much fun!

  16. Nate says:

TooLong is nice, but it’s not an instrumental.
LeMule’s audioquality is not up to snuff and the intro is too long.
I like the Acoustic Blues one.

I’ve written to Tom Joad about http://www.archive.org/details/larry_ogaff
and to the contact for the Dongas Tribe about using some of these http://www.archive.org/details/rainy_night_in_the_bell_tent .. maybe Lark in the Morning or Farewell to Erin

I’m not convinced this is the right approach. I’m looking in Magnatunes for stuff, too.

  17. Nate says:

I’m probably going with the Larry O’Gaff from Tom Joad. It’s the right size and has the old-timey sailor feel.

I looked around at some other things, including a lot of stuff from Magnatunes. Almost everything had WAY too much intro and I’m not going to make you sit thru 30-45seconds of musical intro before I start the story. Not when there’s going to be 22-23 episodes.

I’m still open to suggestions but I’m gonna do a test recording of the intro and outros with this Tom Joad music to see what it sounds like under my voice.

  18. Chris says:

I also like the style of Larry O’Gaff, but it has a very heavy drum in the right ear (I listened on headphones) which is more than a little disturbing.

If I had a vote, which I don’t, then I would vote for the older, less professionally produced tunes. Ones that sound as thought they’ve been recorded as part of a social history project. For me, that style really complements the feeling of the story as reminiscence, rather than made-up tale.

  19. Nate says:

I remixed the original Larry O’Gaff to put the drum in both ears. I had a hard time with that part of it, too. If you listen to the Intro/Outro clip, it’s been cleaned up.

  20. Patty says:

YAY! I can’t wait to read/hear the next part of the story! I need something new to listen to on my commute home since I swear I’ve worn out the files for the other books on my ipod since I discovered the series. I think I’ve listened to each of the completed stories 4 or 5 times each!
