Captain’s Share

A Trader’s Tale from the Golden Age of the Solar Clipper

A shuffling of cabins puts Ishmael Horatio Wang in command of the worst ship in the fleet. He learns that being Captain doesn’t make you infallible and that life in the Captain’s Cabin is filled with new kinds of challenge as he tries to keep the ship moving, the crew out of trouble, and turn a profit to earn his Captain’s Share. In a ship where the officers outnumber the crew, how can he manage to keep everybody happy? Welcome to the SC Agamemnon.

The first episode has been submitted for QC. I have some issues to resolve, but the new book is just around the corner.

UPDATE: Sept 26. If you’re following comments, or Podiobooks on Twitter, or any number of other news outlets, you know that we’ve got a release date of Sept 30. I’ve got the first episode through QC after several false starts (thank you iTunes for hiding what my ID3 tags really looked like — not) and I’m on track to have at least five episodes ready to go when the gates open.

UPDATE: Sept 29. It’s almost midnight on the East Coast of the US and already the 30th in large portions of the globe. Captain’s Share is going live in the next few minutes. I’ll get it posted to iTunes as soon as I can.

Enjoy.

    Nope. 22 is the end.

  2. Rob says:

Wow, I love these stories and have listened to all many many times. And I think this one seemed the least “closed” of all of them. However I also thought it was the best (maybe other than quarter share) So I guess it’s just selfish greed that I can’t believe that I have to wait(what will seem like eternity) for the next one. Well done though Nate. Any idea of when maybe possibly that I might find out how it wraps up (no rush, I mean unless you wanted to)? Love love love the work your doing Nate. Without a doubt the best podiobook author I’ve listened to. THANK YOU

  3. Nate says:

See the What Next? post. It has my current plans on it.

  4. Jim says:

Thanks for another great story and for turning so many Boston rush-hour commutes into something to look forward to!

Few storytellers create intense affection for their characters the way you do for Ish and even the most wayward of his crew. Fewer still create characters compelling enough to provide inspiration long after the last page is turned. Yours is truly a rare gift. Thanks for sharing it with all of us.

  5. Nigel says:

    Wonderful!

I knew it would have to end.

    But, how wonderful.

Something unspoken in the Texture, the Pacing, and the Humanness, makes these somehow very healing tales. You take risks, Nate. And you go off the beaten path.

The fact that the stories seem so natural when read by you suggests that these stories are a real expression of something about you. That is an encouraging thought, since it means if you just keep on being yourself and writing there ought to be many more great things in store.

Finally, is your preferred method of receiving money via Podiobooks? Are there other options as well?

    Thank you very much.

  6. Nate says:

Thank you, Jim and Nigel :)

Yes, Nigel. By accepting donations through Podiobooks, I’m doing my part to keep the Podiobooks service going. As an author I’d be unable to reach the audience I do without them so the small cut they take is well worth the service they provide. And thanks in advance.

A side note to all readers, all donations are gratefully accepted, but if you can’t donate cash — and many people cannot, especially now — please consider leaving a rating or review at either Podiobooks.com or iTunes Music Store. Those ratings and reviews really do help. Thanks!

  7. Joe Ego says:

Thoroughly enjoyed Captain’s Share. I can’t help but feel a bit cliff-hanger’d, but it is a very sweet ride.

  8. Howard says:

I have to agree with others – this one left me feeling like there should be more. Maybe I was just enjoying the story too much and WANT more. :)

One bit of errata that I am sure was already pointed out: I thought a quarter share birth got 20 kilos, not 10. Thenagain in Double Share Ish had to get his ship suits added to his mass allotment but in the earlier books they were included with the birth. Oh the joys of relistening to the whole series on a a recent car trip.

Just discovered “Captain’s Share”. What a fantastic listen. On Chapter 19 and just discovered from this site there are previous podiobooks out there. Joy. I’m 60 on Christmas Day and these podcasts make me feel 16 again. Wakened up my imagination. I’m an English woman who has retired to Spain and doing a lot of travelling round this country. Will be introducing my husband to these stories on our next road trip tomorrow. Thank you Nathan for a wonderful story.

  10. Digamma says:

Congratulations on winning PodioBook’s Founding Choice Award for Captain’s Share. It sure deserved it.

  11. Nate says:

    Thanks.

And new books in the running again this year :) woohoo!

  12. Adam Patrick says:

  13. Evandro says:

Is it possible to obtain this book in pdf? I´m studing English and it would be good for me obtain it.
    Thanks.

  14. Nate says:

    Not at this time, Evandro.

When we catch up with the rest of the series, there will be an ebook version.

  15. I’ve just finished listening to the ‘Share books. The only thing I can say is…WOW. Excellent, Excellent work. I’m an avid scifi/fantasy reader and have been listening to podcast novels and short stories for the past year. Nate, you are a storyteller of the first water; from the stories themselves to your reading of them. I could not stop listening!

  16. PavementPilot says:

I think I have found Ishmael’s father in the series. I believe Franklin P. Wong is Frankie at the Over Easy! Am I correct Nathan?

  17. David says:

LOVING Captain’s Share. It’s everything I hoped it would be. Don’t tell me the ending; I have 3 more episodes to go!

I noticed in CS that the specialty ratings are called “Third Class, Second Class, First class” whereas in QS they were called “Spec 3, Spec 2, Spec 1”. Was this a change by the CPJCT?

Also I think that Freddi calls Ish “Mr WONG” (rhymes with GONG) not “Mr HWANG” (rhymes with PANG) but it was hard to tell. :)

  18. sumofoxx says:

When will this be released for the Kindle? I love the series and would like to get “Captain’s Share” for my Kindle.

  19. The Captain says:

As soon as the rights clear and I get new covers, I’ll be able to make a better assessment.

It’s probably going to be at least 30 days.

  20. skip torok says:

OK, it’s Jan. 2013. I’m reading “Double Share” and now seriously looking for the next one… “Captains Share.” I can find it nowhere! I am not real happy about that either. Today I’m searching the web, going beyond my normal of kindle, nook, amazon and ebay.

Why is this 5th book of the group not available??

  21. The Captain says:

    Sorry, Skip.

When I fired Ridan, all the books reverted and I had to start over on Captain’s Share. It’s currently with the editor and not available yet in text form.

You *can* hear the book on audio. It’s a free download from the iTunes Music Store and from Podiobooks.com.

Sorry for the unhappiness the delay has caused. In the long run, it was something I had to do.
