Steampunk Story Telling

Many of you know I was invited to participate in the kick off anthology for the Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences. It was with a certain level of trepidation that I set about trying to write a short story in somebody else’s universe, but the Ministry posted the finished podcast episode today.

If you need a lil fix to tide you over, head on over the The Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences and look for Episode 03 of Tales from the Archives.

I just listened and I have to say, Tee and Pip did an amazing job mixing this thing together and my hat’s off to Alex White of The Gearheart for the music.

Just. Wow.

Funny thing, Nathan…Pip and I said the same thing about your African Steampunk.

    Just. Wow.

It was our pleasure having your talented voice grace our æthercast. Thank you!

  2. David says:

Pip? Gearheart? I’m getting deja vu. :-P

Can’t wait to hear your latest work!

  3. Evan says:

I’ll have to check this out, I thoroughly enjoyed both Billibub Baddings and Gearheart.

*facepalm* “Pip”‘s name is familiar because … it’s a double easter egg.

Mr. Lowell you never cease to amaze us.

  5. Ignatz says:

Your usual good work, Nate. I very much enjoyed the story. The steamer trunk details were fun :)

  6. CS says:

I wish to express thanks for participating in, and linking to, a great podcast despite that it may cause me to take longer bike rides as my podcatcher is already overflowing!

    Hi,
I’ve just been over to the Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences to give your short story a go and I must say that was one of the best steam punk short stories I have encountered. I liked the way that you did not fall into the trap of making the story about the steam punk technology but allowed the technology to form a frame so that the picture of the story was allowed to shine. I am sorry that this story was a one off I was quite enamoured with your character and the possibilities of his adventures.

    Darren

  8. Nate says:

    Thanks.

Who knows what might come of it. Agent Heathcliffe Durham has a rather long career at the Ministry as I understand it, and perhaps there will be other opportunities for Tales from the Archives.

And who knows. Maybe I’ll go steampunk after I finish the Ravenwood series :D

Maybe next year you will goto Wild Wild West Con down in Tucson. One of the more popular events was the book readings. O. M. Grey did a nice reading and gave away signed copies. Steampunk fans took over Old Tucson Studios those 4 days, and I am sure you would find the crowd very receptive to you.

  10. Nate says:

    That does sound like fun.

    I’ll look into that.

  11. Tee Morris says:

    Brian, Nate…

That one’s on our RADAR, too. We might make the trip in 2012 for that!

  12. Matthew Theobald says:

My deepest thanks Nate, you’ve opened my eyes to a fascinating genre – I never realised it even existed, yet it feels, looks, sounds enthralling. Ep 3 was an intriguing leap into a realm outside the Solar Clipper and yet again shows off your exquisite storytelling to great effect.

I’ve been a South African fan since Quarter Share. Really enjoyed the setting in South Africa for this story, though local accents and names may need some practice. If you ever need a local guide, remember to contact me.

Mr. White’s music is amazing isn’t it? I discovered him a little over a year ago, and loved his stories. I’ve never bought a soundtrack before in my life, but I love The Gearheart’s. Condolences to Alex and his family for their troubles, and props that he still pushes to finish the story, write it well, and give it story closure.

@Nathan – Thanks so much for the shout out on the music! I just wanted to say how much I enjoy your voice on podcasts. Your calming tone and intense vocabulary make me feel as though NPR is missing some sort of science fiction/fantasy show!

@Evan – We do everything we can because we love making stuff for folks just like you. Thanks so much for your support–without you, this wouldn’t be possible for me.
