Odin’s Outpost

The response has been pretty positive on the Brain Storming thread. I’ve started a 20k word novella about Odin’s Outpost and while that would normally be a couple of days work, I’m fitting in a few hundred words here and there between other tasks so I’m gonna be another week or so getting through it. I’ll announce it here when we have a Nibble.

Speaking of Nibbles, Debora is doing a give away and has offered three copies to this group, if anybody is interested. If you were intrigued but didn’t want to drop the buck before, or if you just haven’t had a chance to sample this one, here’s your chance. I know some of you have already bought it, and Debora has told me your response has generally been positive there, so thanks from me, too.

The give away is limited to the Kindle (or kindle app) because of the way gifting works, and she’s also offered to find three of her fans who’d like a copy of my book, too, so it’s a kind of exchange program for readers.

No obligation, no expectation. She only asks for the email addresses of three of you who might like to read her book. Leave me a comment and I’ll pass your addresses along to her.

Thanks for your help and support in this. I think it’s going to be fun.

Oh, and just so you know, I’ve also started chipping away at Cape Grace. Look for that late in the spring.

Wow. March is just around the corner…

Safe voyage.

I would like to get a nibble from Debora. Can’t wait for your new novella about Odin

  3. Marty says:

Yes! Odin’s Outpost needs fleshing out. :)

On a similar vein, Ever think about doing an RPG? I think it would work…

  4. Kira says:

I’d love to get one of Debora’s nibbles. They seem very cool, I’m excited for you to write one too :)

  5. Shirley says:

Well, if there are any spots left to listen to Debora’s nibble, I would like a chance. I’m allways looking for new authors and my kindle stays hot from all the reading!

  6. Scott H says:

I also would love a nibble if any are left…any and all new content (yours or others) is greatly appreciated!

  7. Nate says:

I think we’ve sold out of free nibbles for the moment.

Mine will be up in a week or so :)

Fingers crossed for that and I’m going back to work on it now

So looking forward to the Odin’s Outpost novella and Cape Grace. Maybe you could do novellas for some of the characters we have met along the way. I would love to hear more Pip, Cookie, Brill, Diane, Big Bad Bev and all the rest, however full books on each would be better.
What ever you write we love it.

  9. Ada says:

I feel like a bad fan or something since everyone else seems to know what you’re talking about with Odin’s Outpost. Do you use a setting about which you’ve already published?

  10. Sarah says:

Odin’s Outpost is a sort of homemade space station that is referenced in the 2nd half of the Share series. It is implied to be a pirate’s den of iniquity open to anyone that can afford it. People go there for a walk on the wild side, for gambling and other sundries. It also has some sort of market place where you can buy used parts and possibly stolen goods at jacked up prices. It is located out in the Deep Dark and has only been seen so far (in story) from the outside at a great distance so everything we know about it is second hand knowledge.

It’s pretty exciting that we’ll get to take a closer look at it. I’m actually interested in seeing it from a new point of view. Ish is the best, but I’d like to see the pirates being pirates. I feel like within 6 months of Ish stepping foot on the premises, the pirates might gain self worth, clean up their act, become model citizens of the Diurnia Quadrant and revolutionize the housing industry. And while I would love to read that story too, I also want a fun pirate story.

Odin’s has been begging to be fleshed out a bit since it first appeared in Captain’s Share-I’m looking forward to the novella, and great news about Cape Grace! Will be interesting to see what leads Sarah Krugg to the Lois.

Just out of curiosity, is there any progress on the deckplans you’d talked about for the Iris, and/or any plans for deckplans for some of the other smaller ships we’ve seen in the Solar Clipper universe (i.e. Agammemnon or William Tinker)?

    Dear Nate
You have to WRITE; no Balticon, no Nibbles, just writing. I first met Bob Heinlein in the commissary at Fort Ord California. I was floord, to meet the greatest SF writer in a commisary was beyond belief. From tha meeting we carried on an on again off again correspondence. When he heard that I was coming back from Vietnam in 1970 he asked me to stop by. One of the things we talked about was how regretted not cocentrating on his writing, for even then he could see that he would never finish all that wanted to.

  13. Sean says:

How about the story behind Christine’s mail nickname?

  14. tom avino says:

I would love nibble of Debora’s book if possible.

    Thanks!

  15. Sean says:

… I wonder if Ish’s tablet has a weird autocorrect like the iPad… That should have been “male!”

  16. Lisa says:

@Nate. — spring comes VERY late here in Wisconsin, hope we can have Cape Grace before June! : )

  17. Roger says:

I’d love to have a look at Odins outpost, really I would.
I introduced my wife to the trader series and she fell in love with Ishmael, I’m jealous.

Status: I’ve got about 8,000 words toward my 20k but I’m having trouble dealing with this shorter format. I’d hoped to have it done by now but, alas, it’s not to be.

I’m wrestling with it and we’ll get there.

  19. Patrick says:

Well you could always do a two part nibble if need more words

  20. Sean says:

Thinking back to early computers… Aren’t two nibbles a byte?

  21. Nate says:

Yeah. You’re showing your age with that one tho :)

  22. Sean says:

Guilty, I must admit. I even remember when hex was something a hacker did – and the title was a complement.

  23. Strictly speaking, half a byte (4 bits) is a nybble, not a nibble. :) Nobody really uses the term any more, though.

  24. Ignatz says:

Nate, just wanted to quietly say that if the story you have envisioned is good, but the format is too restrictive, then toss out the artificial constraints and write the story to the length (and form) that pleases you. ;)

  25. Sean says:

And if you’re still looking for short ideas… Why not tell us what happened with the sludge and algae idea? I was re-reading QS and HS recently and got to imagining some interesting permuations.

BTW, I also picked up QS in Kindle format (I have it in IBook as well). There’s a significant difference between the two, with Kindle being much easier to read, even on my iPad. Thought you might find the format issues worth knowing about as FS gets closer.

    Cheers!

  26. Nate says:

    Thanks, Sean.

Kindle formating is more stable and easier to deal with. I’m not sure what the iBook format does but I suspect that the issue may reside in the Smashwords meatgrinder that creates the iBook format (and many others)
