BaltiCon 42, Part Deux

With just a few hours left to run (and not a lot of stuff left to see in the program), I’m hoping to spend a couple hours in the lobby saying “Safe Voyage” to all the great folks I’ve met this weekend from the podcasting community.

One of the things I was surprised at was the distinction between “literary” and “podcast” programming. It seems pretty clear that the two are a long way apart. People promoting first books are working hard with small presses to sell a few thousand copies. The listeners to the Golden Age books represent many more than the average numbers of the standard “first book” author. It’s astonishing.

I’m contemplating some ideas about New Media as well. The application of social media seems to be lagging behind – even in the podcasting community. There’s a certain “semi targeted” shotgun approach, but … I’m not sure we’re actually getting there.

More when I get home.

BaltiCon 42

Wow.

That’s really all I can say.

Wow.

The program swung into high gear last night, but I’ve already been interviewed by Paul Fischer for the BaltiCon podcast. I’ve gotten to meet PG Holyfield, Mur Lafferty, JC Hutchins, Chris Lester, Christianna Ellis, and more. I can’t even THINK of all the people in my Twitter friends list that I’ve had hugs from.

It’s been fascinating hearing the different takes on the value of podcasting and on the different ways we all look at what it is we’re doing. It’s very interesting that even tho many of us — especially in the Podiobook community — are doing pretty much all the same things, there’ a pretty wide variation in what we each *think* that it’s accomplishing.

Today I’m going to try to get out of the echo chamber a bit and visit some of the “non podcast” panels.

If you’re here, and you see somebody wearing a Lois McKendrick tee shirt, say “Hi!”

7th Son – Obsidian

For those of you who have been under a rock and missed JC Hutchins blockbuster 7th Son, go to JC Hutchins.net right now and start listening to Book 1. That should hold you long enough for me to get Double Share out. But not content to bring you the 7th Son Thrill Ride, JC has a new project with some very cool ideas about having other people play in his sandbox.

7th Son – Obsidian is taking on the makings of a first rate Alternate Reality Game. With contributed stories from seven of the podosphere’s luminaries, video’s from victims, and, now, posters, listener contributed audio, and who knows what else, this is turning into one of the great online experiences — and it’s helping to promote great work using all the affordances of the web. Go visit JCHutchins.net to learn more about this ground breaking work.

Take a listen to the audio promo and then get over to JCHutchins.net and see what happens when the lights go out.

Now if I can just get him to fix my contribution to the videos, y’all would get to see me on vid!

Double Share: Update

You’ve been very patient. The status:

I’ve written five chapters, but Day Job has been too invasive with many things getting between me and your next book.

That’s the bad news. The good news is that I’ve worked out a deal with my boss to take 2 days a week off from Day Job so I can dedicate the time to writing. My plan now is to finish all three of the remaining “Share” novels by Labor Day.

I’m going to go thru my email and find all the graphics I haven’t posted and I’ll get those into the gallery tomorrow if nothing else breaks between now and then. And I’ll announce the winners this weekend.

Last and probably least, I’ll be at Balticon over Memorial Day weekend and looking forward to meeting some of you there and playing fanboy with some of the other podcast novelists who will be attending.

There IS still more news that I can’t share, but on the horizon I’ve got:

1. A “voice talent” gig with an Australian author – Geoff Maloney – doing the audiobook version of his upcoming anthology “Six Silly Stories” which will be released later this year in the UK.

2. A contribution to a “best of the pod” short story anthology in the works from Dragon Moon Press.

3. There is a press considering Quarter Share for paper publication. I’ll let ya know if/when it gets picked up.

4. I’m in discussion with JC Hutchins to make some Trader’s Tales ring tones. That’s just starting up so we’ll see where that goes.

In the meantime, if you’re looking for something good to listen to, try Joe Cottonwood’s Clear Heart. Joe and I have a lot in common in our writing, except he’s really good. I think you’ll enjoy learning about carpentry as much as about shipboard life.

Thanks for being patient, shipmates.
